A professional Hearthstone player has been suspended and had all his prize money cancelled for showing support for pro-democracy protesters. Officials from Blizzard Taiwan have thrown out a Hearthstone player for showing support for the ongoing protests in Hong Kong, after he spoke up at the end of a livestream and wore a mask – which have been banned by Hong Kong authorities. Chung ‘Blitzchung’ Ng Wai was competing in the Asia Pacific Grandmasters and proclaimed, ‘Liberate Hong Kong. Revolution of our age!’ at the end of a stream, which got not only him suspended but also the people in charge of the stream – who literally hid under a table during his comments. According to Blizzard this violates an existing competition rule about doing anything that might bring competitors into ‘public disrepute’ or which ‘offends a portion or group of the public, or otherwise damages Blizzard image’.

As a result, Ng Wai has been thrown out of the Grandmasters, has been banned from Hearthstone esports for 12 months, and has had all of his prize money withheld. ‘While we stand by one’s right to express individual thoughts and opinions, players and other participants that elect to participate in our esports competitions must abide by the official competition rules’, said Blizzard in statement. Blizzard then went on to disable all comments on the news story on their site, which they never normally do. The reasons are obvious, in that Blizzard doesn’t want to do anything to offend mainland China, in terms of either players or the government.

The fact that it was on a Taiwanese channel would have made things particularly difficult, especially after Taiwanese-made horror game Devotion was review bombed by Chinese gamers earlier in the year. That led to it being pulled from Steam worldwide, merely for having a Winnie Pooh meme hidden in an obscure part of the game.

This is a country that harvests organs from prisoners in concentration camps, that is actively trying to ethnically cleanse the muslim populace of the country and loads of other endlessly terrible ****. The fact that we're basically bending over for such a regime disgusts me to no end, we live in a day and age where nazis would have won if they paid the right people off...

He's doing nothing but weakening the US in a misguided show of force to appease his base with his tariffs and blacklisting these companies is not enough.

You're defending an evil regime built on human rights abuse and given how you're trying to paint the protesters as violent would-be murderers while not mentioning a single damn thing about the brutality of the HK police force, your defense goes deeper than that, it's sounding an awful lot like support of China to me. Unforgivable.

To support China despite everything that is widely known is to **** on our rights and people who have died for them since China's standards are beginning to seep into our culture. To support China is to support the murder and abuse of people in China's grip, to support their organ harvesting and all their other vile practices. The Chinese government is one of the greatest evils in the world and you are not saying a single word against it.

The terrifying thing is, even if the rest of the world decided to boycott, Blizzard would probably still end up financially better off operating in China ONLY. An audience of over a billion and they spend a lot on this sort of gaming. The Chinese mobile market was enough to turn Konami from a long established AAA publisher into a freemium mercenary. Other companies will follow the money to China over time.

In a rather marvellous update to this story which has basically become an international incident at this point, players around the world are turning a chinese Overwatch character called Mei into a symbol of Hong Kong resistance in an effort to get Blizzard's games banned in China. I hope it works out as Blizzard is essentially selling their souls for a grand total of.... 5% of profits which actually works out as less than that since when you sell in China, they demand quarter of the total profits. Pitiful behaviour from Blizzard.

I doubt they'll let any Winnie the Pooh cosplayers in and after the Diablo Eternal debacle last year, they'll likely screen questions ahead of time. Any protests against Blizzard should take place from outside the event, that way they can't be silenced by Blizzard.

It's borderline scary how much Chinese money controls the world.

Take Hollywood - more and more movies are being made with their markets in mind, with a focus on dumb action instead of story.

I'm obviously not saying that's the most important thing, I'm just using an example. Hollywood employs more people than the federal government, so it's not like it's small.
