Default Young people on UC for over 18 months will be forced to work

Young people who have been out of work for 18 months will be given jobs under new plans to tackle unemployment, Rachel Reeves will announce on Monday.

The chancellor is set to use her speech at the Labour Party conference to unveil a “youth guarantee”, meaning every young person who has received universal credit (UC) benefits for 18 months without “earning or learning” will be offered paid work, an apprenticeship or a place at college.

It is understood claimants will face sanctions such as losing their benefits if they refuse to take up jobs under the scheme without a reasonable excuse.

The guarantee forms part of a pledge of “nothing less than the abolition of long-term youth unemployment”, Ms Reeves will say, as she vows to build an economy that works for working people – and rewards them.

It is understood claimants will face sanctions such as losing their benefits if they refuse to take up jobs under the scheme without a reasonable excuse.

So are these paid jobs or more slave labour (aka 'workfare')?

If it's actual jobs then great. If it's working for free for Poundland etc then I disagree with it completely

Edit. Skimread agree with it as long as it's paid. No clue why they couldn't do it before the 18 month part tho...

I think they will start with those on long term bennies and then reduce the timeframe down, she says it will be paid so I assume they will have to get at least minimum wage

Under her new plan

Benefit Money is on a Clock now
time is ticking away,

Good. I assume most people would be happier working anyway..must be awful trying to live on a hundred quid a week. Creating more paid jobs can only be a good thing

I think this is right. When I was 16 I went straight from school to working in a supermarket.

Today they go straight from school to a lifetime on benefits. It's a massive waste of youth and potential.

When more details of this are revealed, I'll make a firmer view.
However it's something I could see the benefits of doing definitely.

They are going to have to pay employers to take them on with the recent NI hike, in theory I am all for it no fit young person should be languishing on the dole

er being on benefits is not a lifestyle choice its a safety net for those who genuinely cannot work...if someone doesn't want a job they need to find a way to support themselves and not expect working people to support them via their tax

I was wondering that?

And considering we've got bigger issues to deal with such as law & order, digital ID's, and an aging population, I do believe that this policy could've waited.

I'm waiting for these two horrible policies next.

- National Service

- Breathing Tax

I'm exaggerating about the Breathing Tax (fingers crossed) but Starmer just doesn't have a clue unfortunately.

Even with a more understandable policy like getting people employed, he still finds a way to botch it.
