Default Cheaters aren’t welcome in the jungle

WHO would have known that we are such a moral nation. One-time EastEnders actor Marc Bannerman is the first star to have been booted out of the I’m a Celebrity ... Get Me Out Of Here! jungle. His crime? Flirting with Welsh singer Cerys Mathews, of Catatonia fame.

Marc is not married to partner Sarah. They have no children and are not engaged. Neither the obligatory pretty country church nor OK! magazine have been booked to celebrate their nuptials. They have only been together two-and-a-half years, which even by my blink- and-you-miss-it marriage standards, is the flash of the eye.

Marc and Sarah probably have yet to reach the garden centre on a Sunday stage of settled relationship boredom. They may be still having sex, for goodness sake.

In these circumstances, if Marc had met Cerys at an office Christmas party and they’d copped off to the stationery cupboard for a snog, it would have been no big deal. Not nice behaviour, granted, and a bit embarrassing the morning after. However, hardly grounds for the public stoning he has received in the form of eviction from the jungle.

I was talking to the only one of my girlfriends not to be divorced or separated, “It must feel like you’re the only pin still standing in a bowling alley,” I said.

She nodded.

In this environment, for the public to apparently hold such an absolutist view of fidelity – hugging on a hammock is an offence punishable by eviction – seems bizarre. But perhaps the more chaotic our own lives become, the more we expect others to live up to an ideal?

Marc’s girlfriend Sarah told Ant and Dec. “It’s been extremely painful to watch the man I love disrespecting me and our relationship in front of the nation with someone he’s known for a week.” A whole week?

It only took Boris Becker five minutes to meet a waitress in Nobu and then adjourn to a broom cupboard to make a baby. A significant section of the young Cardiff population takes about the same amount of time on a Saturday night to select someone with whom to wake up on Sunday morning.

Timing may be all on stage, but in real life, your average bloke doesn’t spend weeks or months mulling over whether he fancies someone. He either does or he doesn’t, followed by the decision whether to act on this or not.

Sarah has not been treated well, but if she wants fidelity, maybe she should steer away from thesps who are famous for getting off with each other.

The person I feel really sorry for in all this is Cerys Mathews. She seems genuinely nice and to have fallen for Marc. When she asked him in code whether it was all just a holiday romance, he basically said “yes”. Her beautiful, open face crumpled.

It is this, I think that is his real crime and the reason he lost public sympathy.

None of us likes a cheat, but what we really hate is a user.

We can root for star-crossed lovers, those who we feel ought to be together but can’t be, but if one is merely playing with the other’s emotions, our own hearts harden.

Marc told Ant and Dec, he just “needed some love” which is a cheater’s charter. It’s amazing he didn’t say that Sarah didn’t understand him as well.

Marc and Cerys may yet make a go of it. Marc could very shortly be single. However, she will always have to worry what he’s up to when he’s on tour, or in a new TV series.

For now, Cerys will have seen Marc’s exit and may fear a public backlash. But, she shouldn’t. Wales still loves you, Cerys, even if your taste in men is a bit suspect.

I have had a inkling that it wasnt real for him but for her it was. She seems to sweet and trusting to be in it for the limelight.

I just think its all seems rather unconvincing on both Marc's and Sarah's side.

If your heartbroken you dont do the rounds of TV shows
