I totally think so... I think he was an imaginery friend when Newt was younger and since Newt found Sean's body - he has been remembering his past and childhood from when he found another body and 'Eli' helped him through it so it seems that he has came back since this has happened.

This means that his "alter-ego" (Eli) can overpower him and make Newt appear to act strangely and abnormally.

Thats dissociative identity disorder, schizophrenia is where you hallucinate and you imagine someone to be there, whether you can see them or not. With schizophrenia you are always the same person, your personality doesn't change, but you get controlled by hallucinations. In simple terms its a little voice in your head that people can hear, it seems real and they obey the voice.
