LOVE IT or hate it, Big Brother is back. And this year you might spot a familiar face on your television screen.

The trouble is, you also might have missed former Croydon High School pupil Vanessa Layton-McIntosh, 19, as she seems to be the quietest of all the bizarre housemates on the Channel 4 show.

But a close friend insists she is not as boring as the public may think - and that it is all part of her masterplan to scoop the winner's prize.

In a plunging black dress and sporting new blonde highlights, business studies student Vanessa was the fifth person to enter the Big Brother house as series six kicked off last Friday night.

If she manages to keep on the right side of her housemates and the voting public she could be coming back to Croydon with a £100,000 cheque in her hand.

But Vanessa, who hails from Thornhill Road, Croydon, and describes herself as girlie, materialistic and loud, has her work cut out.

Already there have been slanging matches, tears and tantrums breaking out among her fellow contestants who include a belly dancer, a witch and a former speech writer for Margaret Thatcher.

So far she has managed to avoid getting involved in the squabbling, and this week school friend Natalie Walkes says keeping her head down is all part of Vanessa's game plan.

Ex-Croydon High pupil Natalie, 19, said: "Since I found out she was in the house I have been watching her and I was quite surprised at how quiet she's been. There are a lot of loudmouth lively people in there this year and in reality Vanessa is like that too. We all were in school.

"Vanessa was in the year above me but she used to hang out with us. We were good friends. I know the programme is edited but we haven't seen very much of her yet and I don't think she's really being herself. Perhaps it's part of her plan to stay quiet and let other people get chucked out.

"The way she's going she won't be nominated for a while."

Natalie, who now works behind the bar at Mojama, in Croydon High Street, said there might even be the possibility of romance in the air for her old friend.

She said: "Something could definitely happen with her and Science. He's her type of guy."

Vanessa, who went on to the sixth form at Archbishop Tenison's Church of England School, is now at university in London.

She has already confessed to Big Brother that she has her eye on a couple of people in the house but so far she's keeping quiet about who they are.

A self-confessed chocoholic, Vanessa lists her favourite book as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and admitted she has a pink Barbie bedspread.

But Natalie said there was more to Vanessa than meets the eye and the housemates could be in for a shock.

She said: "Vanessa is a real character and I think she will really come into her own after more people have left and there are less attention-seekers in the house. At school Vanessa was into having fun but she's not stupid. She did her studies and was basically a good girl.

"I think she could go all the way and it would be cool if she stays in. It would be great for everyone to get behind her and vote to keep her in the house.

"We need a Croydon girl to win!"

Being quiet and not getting involved in arguments might save her from her fellow housemates, but it's certainly not going to save her from my almighty voting finger when her time is up.

We've certainly not seen much of Vanessa and I wonder how much this has to do with the editing of the programmes, rather than her not playing much of a part?

I hope she gets more camera time soon as I think she could be one of the better players. Be a shame to loose her before we get a chance to see her real self.

id like to tell you that big brother do not like maxwell, so they only edit the bad bits mostly of him, realised last nite...

they are one devious organisation, big brother.. they loved nadia last year, only showed her good bits, and gave her a task that would boost her ratings.. its not on.

i just read on the site about roberto throwing water over anthony and max, and big brother said "maxwell grumbled bla bla"....

trying to make him out to be the bad guy just because they dont like him, it really does my head in...

I actually think they've showed a lot of Maxwells good sides! they only showed the argument last night because he was involved in it and to be honest I think it made Kemal look worse than Maxwell!

Anthony was drenched while sleeping on a beanbag today when Roberto attacked him with a bowl of water.

The Geordie boy was curled up and sleeping like a baby when Roberto found the temptation too much. First he threw some water at Maxwell, who mumbled, "Piece of s***," at him.

I don't think they are making him look bad anyone would say that if someone threw water on them fully clothed! Well I know I would

She was fabulous in the diary room and did I detect a bit more sexiness coming through too?

Showed a bit more cleavage and bending over in her jeans showing her string was def a step in the right direction for the male viewers.
