i just went for a meal in a greek place and the guy gave me funny shot an said we should come back on a saturday cos the smash plates seen it in films but why do they do it?

aint it some sort of celebration thing for them... like when they get married they stamp on a glass..'thing' and smash it :s not sure.

I'm a Greek Australian.Not many restaurants in Sydney still do it. One that I know of. It usually happens spontaneously during the dancing where a man is soloing in that carefree drunken sort of way and he smashes a plate as a way to say "nothing matters, materialism doesn't matter, money doesn't matter....enjoy life". Then everyone cheers and joins in. I don't think many restaurants even in Greece still do it so if you get the oppurtunity got along and have a laugh.
