TBH, James comes across as a troublemaker.

James is totally confident that he is safe from physical harm in the house.Audley could sneeze and knock him over and this is what makes his "I am not afraid of you" repeat appear pathetic. Likewise when George chances his arm and now we hear that David fancies his chances.

Audley is being baited and is conducting himself well under the circumstances because if he chose to go physical he could wipe the floor with David and James simultaneously.

Part of James's make up is that he is argumentative, that's why he got the boot from Strictly. He feels the need to pursue this hard man image, but in reality he is just a grade 'A' dick in ridiculous shorts. Standing up to Audley makes his image grow (in his own head) he was probably bullied at school after doing the Billy Elliot thing because his bios says he has been dancing from a very young age.
