And don't forget the odd token Ginger haired men with freckles, Nicaraguan Dwarfs, Hermaphrodites, Lithuanians, Polish, Albanians, People with badly fitting dentures, Transgenders, Acne sufferers, Jolly Roly Poly Jamaican women in gaily coloured clothes - we must include all types of people from all walks of life so as to ensure that we do not discriminate against anyone.
Surely it will not take much rewriting to accomodate as many different nationalities and types as possible in even the most minimalist of productions? The 5 cast members in Beckett's 'Waiting For Godot' for example, can be changed from two tramps to 50 tramps and can be retitled; 'Waiting For Godot And His 567 Mates' - Oh, No Good, I forgot, Godot never turns up. Ah well, perhaps writer Neil Cross can take his absurd creation Luther one step further and write a series entitled 'Luther and the 645 Serial Killers'

Film companies can choose whoever they want for their films. It's their money so it's no ones business but theirs who they choose to star in their movies.

Blocking them or just don't have the roles?Maybe more roles for black actors need writing. That could be a problem created by the script writers.I suppose it also depends on the programme or film though as to the roles they need filling at the time.Just sticking black or disabled actors in any old role that's not written for them would just be odd.

He obviously believes that there is racism within our society (which is true) and that it is blocking black people from achieving acting success - which is subjective, but in a society with some racist prevelance, not unlikely.
![]() There are four types of racism though, and I'm not sure which he is referring to here.

But just to be clear here, a black actor is discussing his story on how race has held back his success in the UK movies industry, and instead of showing compassion.. you say he needs to move out of our country? ![]() I don't follow your logic here.

I'd say they are under represented in drama, comedy and soap.

Just look at Eastenders.Albert Square's like a UN summit.I don't think they're that under represented. There are disabled presenters on the BBC.I've seen two recently.Infact Grange Hill had a disabled student back in the eighties or early nineties.I honestly don't think its a problem.Maybe Idris has been recently knocked back from a role and has sour grapes?

Elba.
He's one of the best actors this country has produced in recent times, and unlike most other British actors that make it in the US he actually still comes home and makes British shows and films, which I'm sure benefits the TV/film companies quite a lot. The last thing they want is for him to "do one to LA" |

I agree - totally absurd and OTT hammy. The first series would not have made it past the Script Readers had it been an unknown writer. We had a D.I. who was so psychologically, mentally and emotionally unstable he would have been removed from his position in a jiffy, and a female serial killer following him across the London rooftops clutching a huge carving knife - pure shlocky horror hokum which failed to have me 'suspending my disbelief' as a great script should, and had me laughing out loud at the awfullness of it all instead.
Idris IS a very gifted actor though, and a seemingly decent and nice person, and he deserves his success, but the idea that any actors are 'held back' from roles simply BECAUSE they are black is ludicrous. If the part demands a black actor and the actor who is auditioning is good enough - he/she will get the role. Or do some members think that roles should specifically be given to black actors just BECAUSE they are black? This in itself is discriminatory and racist.

You are in the minority in thinking that, it's reviewed very well and won a couple of Golden Globes. Downton Abbey is the only other British show in recent times I can think of to achieve anything like that.
