Default Theme mess starts in earnest

For a start

Motown (again) a record label from before any of the singers were born, a sound that was probably last relevant (chart wise) in the 80s at a stretch.

and then we get Honey G singing a song from 1997 that fits because its er "a black song"?

No wonder they are loosing viewers like rob is losing weight if they cannot even think of a theme other than a 50 year old done to death one

It beggars belief

I would argue that there was a fairly strong Motown revival in pop music around 2008 (Duffy, Girls Aloud's 'The Promise', Amy Winehouse's second album) but yeah... but then again chasing what's current would only leave them with "tropical house week" and "EDM week" themes and **** all else.

surely a dance week an 80s week a 90s week etc is better than motown which is pointless with people mainly under 30 and white

britpop week, beatles week even, oasis/blur week, Bowie week and so on

The show's biggest problem is that none of the judges associated with it ever know a single thing about producing good music. All of Simon's successes have come under the guidance of external powers; left to his own devices he'd be trodding out the same Sinitta crap he did when he started.

...how would a Beatles week be any more relevant than a Motown week

'Tis all irrelevant what 'Theme' they plump for when they continue to take classic tracks and strangulate them until they are barely recognisable as such.

I understand about 'injecting' one's own individuality upon a song, but it is all rather pointless if that results in just the lyrics of a classic song being all that's left to identify it.

They become 'classics' for a reason - and that is because they are deemed as near perfect as it gets upon original release, and remain so through the decades following.

I imagine Simon Cowell would think it relevant and trendy, avant garde and oh so clever if some 'artless' prick like Jackson Pollack painted over the Mona Lisa in his own style.

British, played much more on UK radio, far greater chance the young people would know the songs etc etc

You are correct MB - it wouldn't be 'more' relevant, just AS 'relevant'.

I think that people confuse the word 'Current' with the word 'Relevant'.

Not all 'current' music is relevant and certainly won't be in 30, 40, or 50 years time, but some music from the 30's, 40's, 50's and 60's onwards are 'classics' which - being so - are just as 'relevant today.

In my opinion of course.

I wouldn't agree with the last two points (if anything, some Motown songs are better known as a whole because a) there's so many more of them and b) The Beatles didn't allow their songs weren't on streaming services until very recently, so if anything young people would be more likely to know the group but less likely to know a lot of the songs - the opposite being true of Motown) and I don't see why being British makes them more worthy?
