Top 10... Most Entertaining Big Brother 8 Housemates
Now that we've got down to the "business end" of the series (I could be a sports reporter, easy) it's time to sit back and have a little think about what has already happened. Today, we're concentrating on the Top 10 Most Entertaining Housemates.
There have been so many housemates this year, (over 20!) that some have had to *just* miss out making the Top 10 despite being very entertaining. Shanessa seemed totally alien in this house, like she'd crash-landed from BB7, and so was entertaining for a short while, just for being different - but she doesn't make the list. Others like Kara are more odd than entertaining, and some didn't even come close; specifically Laura, Nicky, Amy, and the dullest of them all, poser Billi. But that's enough of who didn't make the list, who did?
=10. JONTY: Had Jonty entered the house earlier, he'd be further up the list, I'm sure, because I think we're only just starting to see all there is to him. He is truly a man of many sides... A genuine eccentric, he's also - bizarrely - incredibly self-aware, and that's what's so interesting. Yes, he's annoying at times, and he can't be the easiest person to live with, but he's made me laugh a fair few times, and for that he just sneaks in.
10. SEANY: Forgive me for being naughty straight away, but I needed to get Seany onto this list, and I didn't know where else to put him. Most people I speak to are as annoyed as I was that he was evicted so soon (who actually voted for him?!) as he was fun, cheeky and a bit of a stirrer - a good thing in the entertainment stakes. I can see why he was nominated, but why did we get rid of him?
9. TRACEY: I wasn't sure whether to put Tracey into the list as she has actually been a bit of a let-down, in some ways. We thought she was that fun-loving cheesy-quaver, and I've no doubt that that's precisely what she is away from the house. As it turns out, she can be pretty surly and irritable. But when she's on good form, and there are plenty of smokes around, even I can admit that she can be rather funny; when she's good she's very very good, and when she's bad, she's horrid.
8. CAROLE: It's hard, sometimes, to differentiate between a big character, and someone who's genuinely entertaining... and I'm not sure I've got this right. Is Carole actually entertaining? Well, if 'entertaining' means someone who provokes strong opinions, then Carole just *has* to be on the list.
7. GERRY In a similar manner to Jonty, Gerry was an entertaining housemate because he was so multi-faceted. On one hand, he was the house intellectual - all ancient artifacts and art history - and on the the other he relied on a stuffed toy animal for emotional support. For his mood swings, intellect and, of course, Freddie, Gerry makes the list.
6. ZIGGY: Ziggy on his own.. is he actually that interesting? Or is he just a little bland? Well, for being one half of the Chiggy relationship which was genuinely fascinating subtle, and complicated, he certainly deserves his place in the list, but he can also come up with the odd funny line on his own, and he's started to stand up to Carole a little bit, too, so kudos for that.
5. LIAM: Liam is not the most outrageous character ever to grace Big Brother, but it can't be argued that he's not entertaining. His biggest advantage is that he manages to say what he thinks in a jokey way, which therefore doesn't upset people (apart from Carole, obviously, but he can't help that). He's a smart and a little cynical, but also up for a good time, and sees straight to the core of people.
4. SAM AND AMANDA: Fourth place seems disappointingly low for the twins, doesn't it? But I'm afraid I have no choice, fourth place it must be. Sam and Amanda are truly a ray of sunshine in the house. Irrepressibly cheery, pink, and bouncy, they're just what the rest of the housemates need, and, hearteningly, they really know it. Yes, I do often despair at their lack of any sort of knowledge about the world around them, but the way they've acted throughout the series really is a joy. Whether it's talking at a hundred miles an hour, being, it would appear, genuinely and scarily telepathic, or making up countries, they're the definition of entertainment.
3. CHANELLE: Now, Chanelle's a classic housemate, isn't she? Sometimes you laughed at her, sometimes you laughed with her, sometimes you wanted her to shut up, and sometimes you felt rather sorry for her. Of course, being the second half of the Chiggy pair means she has a free pass on to the list, but Chanelle was much more than just that. She has been this year's Nikki in terms of hissy fits, and, if anything, was even funnier in the Diary Room. My personal favourite, I think, was when she was talking about having to eat half a carrot: "And I'd probably end up with the pointy end!" she cried. Just brilliant. Chanelle - you left too soon.
2. CHARLEY: Yes Charley - it's the silver medal for you. Charley was, undoubtedly, one of the most objectionable contestants ever to enter the house, but I have to admit, with a heavy heart, that she sure was entertaining. The best thing about her was her complete lack of self-awareness - it made it easier to dislike her, because you know she's metaphorically got her fingers in her ears going LA-LA-LA-I-CAN'T-HEAR-YOU. Liam, very occasionally, got through to her, but it never had any lasting affect, and soon she was off in her own little self-obsessed world again, lying and arguing like always.
1. BRIAN: Well, it just had to be, didn't it? It's really quite simple to be entertaining if you're argumentative, because you can't fail to have a huge impact on the house (though Charley did do it particularly well, it has to be said). But being massively entertaining and really nice at the same time, well that makes for a special housemate - a special housemate like Brian. It's his use of language that's so wonderful - my favourite so far has to be the classic "Big Bruvva's trying to make us out as a bunch of yoghurt tops or summink!" Add to that his unrequited love for Miss Amanda - romance is always a good boost to entertainment value - and he just *has* to be this year's most entertaining housemate.
