Default The Wire Discussion Thread

*Contains Spoilers*

So I’ve begun watching The Wire (well tell a lie I’ve already seen and finished the 1st season a couple weeks back ) but I thought I’d do a little review of each episode as I watch them. I’m not sure how many others on TIBB have seen this but its amazing and I’m hooked already, plus I’d like to see others opinions on this series, the characters etc.

So... it looks like I’ll be starting season 1 again

Episode 1: The Target

This was a good pilot episode. Found it very engaging, I’m liking all the characters so far and it wasn’t to hard to follow and understand what was going on. There were also a few funny moments in this episode which was pretty good as well.

The scene where D’Angelo is on trial and Stringer is sitting noticing McNulty behind him and he shows him his little drawing, even McNulty found that a little amusing .

Also the bit where McNulty is called into the Majors office and he’s just sat there with both his middle fingers up. He was pissed that McNulty was talking to that judge about the Barksdale Organization

Stringers scenes were pretty cool. He looked like the boss in his scenes, I enjoyed that. He also (in my opinion) seemed somewhat pleased that D’Angelo was demoted to the pit. I mean maybe it’s because he thinks D’Angelo is too weak for the game? Or maybe it’s where his uncle will protect him at all costs because he’s family. The mistake that D’Angelo has made, if it was someone else in the organisation I would’ve imagined that they would’ve been killed possibly but where D’Angelo is family it’s not an option to do that?

I’ve gotta give props to the actor who plays Bubbles. He’s so convincing of being a drug addict, he plays this part phenomenally well and I look forward to his scenes as the show goes on. I did kinda feel bad for Bubbles when he see his friend Jonny in the hospital bed and what D’Angelo’s crew did to him. (Wallace with that bottle holy ****!? ).

Lesson learned here... never try to rip off drug dealers

Nice spot. Most people dont notice that first view but its clear Stringer doesn't like D'Angelo.

Nice review. Pretty much covered it, other scenes you want to take another look at -

The scene between Jimmy and Bunk in the house with the dead body - Bunk 'Giving a f8ck when it wasn't his turn' - There alot of Police procedure going on in that scene. From Bunk mentioning the body was in a house so thinking that its an easier case to solve but then realizes its a 'Stone whodunnit' and is virtually unsolvable. Jimmy asking him why he took the call as their squad werent on duty, Bunk replying he has to a big credit card bill etc. Theres alot going on in that one scene..

When Wee-Bey and D exit Bey's truck with Jay-z Izzo playing on the radio, the framing of Burger and Chicken in the window of the fast food store. Bey = Burger, D'Angelo = Chicken.

The scene by the railway - one of these in each series. Its a big exposition point where the characters tell us what just happened or about to happen. The story about shooting the mouse is a true story BTW. It was one of the exec producers Ed Burn partners who shot a mouse with his service weapon that was terrrosing his wife

I started watching it again and got to episode seven in one night straight back in to it.

No worries. The other option is to download it but if you're not comfortable doing so then that totally cool. There must be a place to watch it that cheaper.

Oh Yh I didn’t notice that. I think my attention was too focused on the neon lights of the chicken shop and me thinking ”This is so 2002” . This was another one of those scenes that showed how D was somewhat a weaker soldier than his peers and how he is probably perceived by them. He was forgetting the rules of the organisation about not talking in a car, you can see when Wee Bay’s driving along and D’Angelo’s “talking”. You can see Wee Bay feeling uncomfortable because he’s breaking a rule that can be damaging to themselves and the organisation forcing him to take action and remind D very abruptly.

Oh that’s a true story? I never knew that Feel sorry for the mouse though.

It’s so good all these little details that they add in it's just brilliant.

Yes I bought the DVD boxset from Cex for £15. It is on Amazon Prime but you have to buy it still even if you have a subscription and the first season was £20 on its own

Yh I normally don’t like EBay for that reason happened on a used CD I bought before (it was supposed to be a garage CD but ended up being The Script instead )

I got mine from Cex but I bought it on there website and they delivered it pretty quick to be fair. It’s almost like brand new as well

You have to watch it Ammi. It’s really really good I’m hooked already.

The framing of the Burger Chicken is seems almost too obvious when its pointed out but I didnt see it first time thru either. I read some notes that one of the producers had made and he mentioned that they tried to show right from the beginning that D'Angelo was not respected by the senior enforcers.

So many stories they tell are true. The story Freamon tells in episode four of the old lady whos murder he investigated that got him transferred to Pawn shop division for 13 years ( and four months ) is also a true story.

I'm gonna finish the first series tonight. Got right back into it really quickly.

Season 1 Ep2: The Detail

Ok so when Prezbo fires his gun in the office I was in stitches . He’s just instantly hated now by the lieutenant.

Also enjoyed the chicken nugget scene with D’Angelo basically explaining the truth about capitalism and giving them some proper knowledge how “it’s about money”. I love his line “You think Ronald McDonald gonna go down to that basement and say hey Mr nugget, you da bomb. We’re selling chicken faster than you can tear the bone out, so I’m gonna write my clowny ass name on this fat ass check for you” . It shows that D is actually quite intelligent in a different way compared to the other soldiers and I could imagine if he wasn’t in ‘the game’ he could probably make something of himself. It also kinda shows how those that work at the bottom tend to stay there whilst the ‘real players’ reap the rewards and it can kinda be applied to the Barksdale organisation as well. I also found Wallace’s reply to that comment quite innocent as well when he says ”still had the idea though”.

Also liked the part where Bubbles was making people try on hats but was helping Kima get pictures. He’s a pretty good snitch to be fair and it was a smart move to use coloured hats so they could work out the big players in the organisation.

That scene where D was being interrogated was intense. It was clearly showing how he’s got more of a conscience compared to others in the organisation which reinforces there opinion of him being weak and not really cut out for the game. They almost broke him until his lawyer came storming through.

The part at the end was also intense when Prez, Herc and Carver went down to the towers. Why did they do that? I loved how LT Daniels thought of that excuse for Prez on the spot. It just goes to show how bad corruption can be in the police force and things that a majority of us don’t really see. I understand that Daniels is just protecting his own but they have a huge amount of responsibility yet they don’t enforce themselves?

Great Review

The hat trick is another true story. It was one of Ed Burns snitches - who Bubbles is loosely based on - who had a photographic memory for faces.

I have trouble with this episode as it mainly concentrates of the cops.
A great trivia question - How many times does a police Officer fire their gun in the entire series Answer - three, and strangely its the same character all three times, Prez. Twice in this episode and once more in a season three episode.

Thanks GiRTh

Pretty cool that turned out to be a true story. It’s just really clever how it’s so simple if that makes sense? It reinforces how important Bubbles is to the case they’re trying to build since without his knowledge they would be pretty far behind.

I do tend to find the police scenes a little difficult to follow sometimes but after watching this episode again I managed to see things a little more clearer. I did like Lester’s introduction in this episode, had this sort of mysteriousness to it and me thinking ‘there’s a lot more to this guy than what I’m seeing at the moment’.

Kinda funny how Prez is the only cop to fire his gun throughout the whole series

First up apologies for not posting here sooner (blame Love Island ). I’ve now finished all of season 1 again but I’m going to space out my posts so it gives time for people to discuss them. For today I’ll just post episodes 3 & 4.
