South Africa's first dedicated anti-retroviral treatment clinic opens thanks to Crusaid

Today the first dedicated anti-retroviral treatment (ART) clinic will be opened in Guguletu, South Africa
by Ebrahim Rasool the Premier of the Western Cape Government and Crusaid's Chief Executive, Robin
Brady.
The Hannan Crusaid Clinic was funded by Crusaid, the national fundraiser for HIV and AIDS, through a
legacy left to the charity by Katie Hannan. The clinic works with local partners the Desmond Tutu HIV
Foundation and the Western Cape Government to deliver treatment to 1,000 outpatients. The main
focus of the work is on the prevention of mother to child transmission of the HIV virus. Prior to the clinic
opening, mother to child transmission occurred in 76% of cases. The programme of drug treatment at
the clinic has reduced mother to child transmission to between 2 and 3%. This has been achieved
through high adherence levels, 90-95% - rates higher than have been recorded in Western Europe...

...Josh Rafter, Crusaid patron and contestant on Big Brother 2, has visited the clinic to see the work first
hand. He reported, "In the short-term it is providing employment opportunities as all the counsellors
working on the project are recruited from the local community and are paid a wage. In the long-term the
Hannan Crusaid Clinic will have an effect on the whole of the province now that its treatment protocol
has been adopted by the government. The clinic is a real hope for the future as it is saving the lives of
children born to infected mothers."
