Ok I know some of you will be like wtf its not taken seriously enough but in schools I think they are way to defensive about it. Like this week, in my year at school there has been like 3 or 4 fights, in one of which someone broke their thumb and had to go to hospital and then this one boy said something about black to another boy. out of all of this one of the boys got permanently expelled. This was the boy who said something like "black mother****er".
Anyway that's not the only reason. I have seen it in other ways too! Like I really really don't get how saying "****" is racist when British are called "Brits" and Americans get called "yanks" etc! I am not trying to cause a fight or anything but does anyone agree with me? |

I think there's a tendency to over-react to things which aren't racist... just someone perceives them to be.
I do get what you are saying. Obviously racism is serious, and shouldn't be tolerated, but there's over-sensitivity sometimes, which leads to the 'race card' being played when it's unjustified. |

Yes and I hate when people bring up the whole race card thing to get sympathy when they're not even bothered about it.

What I dont agree with is that it's ok for a black person to say things that a white person would get slammed for.

Calling someone a **** is racist! end of. Calling someone a brit etc has never been used offensively in the past ie: Brits out Brit bastard etc...just never happened...with the other word yes... widely!
You have to look at the historical and social context! White people have historically been the opressors and had the power, which is why calling someone a white bastard doesnt have the same impact. Its not been a level playing field for a long time and we are really still at the beginning of change and moving towards equality! |

There are a gang of Asian boys threatening to knife my younger brother and his friends because on his Bebo there's a picture of one of them with this Asian boy in their year, where he's trying to lick his face; there's a bunch of comments on the photo where they're being racist jokingly and the boy in the picture is joining in with it, because it's a joke and they're friends. Then, some Asian kids from another school saw it, and are threatening to stab them for being racists - to an outsider it looks bad, but the fact that the boy in the photo is joining in with it surely shows that they're not being serious? Anyway, they tried to explain this to the guys, who clearly are just looking for a fight.
It's instances like that that makes me wonder if racism is just a scape goat for "victims of racism" to be violent. Racism, in its true sense, is when somebody is denied something or treated cruelly because of their race. Refusing to hire somebody on the basis of their skin colour is racist; calling someone a name just doesn't seem 'racist' to me in comparison to that. I'm not condoning racism at all, merely questioning what is racist and what isn't. Name calling shouldn't be called racist just because somebody's colour is brought into it. |

I agree with NettoSuperstar - if you take into account the hundreds of years of slavery, or race-hate crimes, I think if you were of one of those races, you'd feel a little defensive too.
However, I'm almost too tentative about what I say sometimes. I have an asian friend who's ridiculously camp, so he's pretty much a target for ignorant people - so we'll joke about that occasionally, but when someone calls him a "**** ****" it's a step too far. Ultimately I think racism, and other forms of intolerance aimed at something an individual cannot control (gender, sexuality), are just the worst possible traits. I have no time for racists/sexists/homophobes. |

I get what you mean. Racism, as we all know is disgusting, but it's the PC that goes too far. Like, sometimes if I'm describing a black person to someone, I feel I can't call them black because that would be deemed as "racist", when I'm just explaining what they look like. If they were white, I would do the same.
Name calling can be offensive, but as long as people know you aren't being intentionally racist, I think it's okay. But I suppose, if I was black/asian etc., I would probably find it offensive as well. The thing is if we are to have equality, that means that other races shouldn't make of fun of "whites", because I feel ATM it is socially acceptable to be racist towards white people, when it shouldn't be. Equality is about treating everyone the same way, not giving the previously inferior the advantage. |

I always relate somthgni like this to the world war.
Like we had people over from germany saying how we can't say anything like nazi's to them becuase they aren't obviously they had nothing to do with the war, they wern't even alive then and it would be unfair to judge them for what happened in their country. But people have said usually when we were in school how we calling "a bunch of white kids" responsible for slavery, our people. Which really aggrovates me. Id prefer to just leave everything in the past. And yeh people do over react massively, sometimes it is justified though obviously. |

The truth is some people have racism tattood on their eye balls and see racism where ever they go.......
We now live in a nation of treading on egg shells tring to please all at all times.......Sure symptom of total maddnesss. In real life no one cannot offend and no one can not be offended........People are far too diverse to avoid such a scenerio........So the alternative maddness derived by the political correctness brigade is to turn whole chunks of people in to babies that cry foul when they hear a word they don't like.....Instead of being ADULTS that cope with the normal extemities of life....... |
