After Kanye's "ALL TIME! ALL TIME!" speech at the VMAs, which video do you think is better?
Beyonce's video or Taylor Swift's I've seen the Beyonce video a few times. It wasn't anything special the first time or the second time - or even now. I find it quite dull. It seems like some amateur threesome just trying to copy the 1969 Bob Fosse routine by moving so fast that they may dislocate every joint in their body. (watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpxz9v_3S78) I also find how they used different camera angles and all those flashes in the video insulting to people in order to make it look like it is 3 and a half minutes of dancing when it's a load of edits put together. I like Taylor's far more as it, does the job without trying to be something it's not. I also think that the Beyonce video on Youtube is only popular because boys like to watch it with a box of kleenex... but anyway |

In my opinion, Taylor wins it. I recognise the iconic effect of Single Ladies, but at the end of the day, you can try to put it down to 'simplicity' or w/e but it is essentially justBeyonce and her dancers dancing on a white sheet. Comapred to the full production Taylo puts on in You Belong With Me.
but each to their own :P |

I got a link (in the first post now) to how Beyonce has copied off numerous people in so many videos and it's quite shocking to watch. Even the Single Ladies one is a copy of a Bob Fosse routine from 1969! |

I actually never understood the hype about Beyonce's video. I find it very boring, and the song - annoying. Saying that, I've never seen Taylor's video so it can't be that great either.

It has to be Beyonce's Single Ladies.
And wheter you like it or not, whether you agree with the fact that it was edited to look like one long routine or not, wheter you think the dancing sucked or not, or wheter you thinkk that it was a total rip off of Bob Fosse(which she's already admitted to in a kinda "it was a celebration of and tribute to his work" kinda thing) or not... It's stil going to go down as one of the most iconic videos of our decade, if not ever. Taylor Swifts video, nice and all as it is, is a rehash of every nerdy-person-wanating-to-be-with-the-popular-person themed video that we've all seen countless times before. IMO! |

IMO![/rquote] I think in this case, the view that it is iconic is left with people trying to push it as iconic. I find it tedious and boring. I still think Dire Straits' Money for Nothing, Massive Attack's Unfinished Sympathy, Bjork's Big Time Sensuality, Michael Jackson's Thriller, U2's The Street's have no name, Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer, Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, Madonna's Vogue and Madonna's Like a Prayer, Depeche Mode's Enjoy the Silence are all iconic videos but this is really just 3 women dancing. That's it. It isn't a clear one take of a woman walking down the street singing a song like in Unfinished Sympathy, or Bjork going down 5th Avenue dancing on a truck with one camera, in one take, or Thriller... or on top of a roof in LA to make a video or the use of animatronics and animation like in Sledgehammer or the switch between live and special effects in Bohemian Rhapsody or a bloke walking around on hills with a deck chair and then over snow over great landscape while dressed as a king in Enjoy the Silence. That stands out. To a vast majority of people, who think Beyonce isn't really anything special - this is just three women dancing. Well you could say dancing if she didn't look like she was intentionally trying to break her bones or sprain her joints for 3 and a half minutes. We've seen girl bands do this for decades, over and over so as to why this is popular, I feel is all down to the imagination and personal preference. I think it is dull and boring and Beyonce practically copies everything she does from other people. |

I think both videos aren't anything to brag about, but Swift's song/video is worse.
So Beyonce. |

I like Beyonce's video, people are looking too much into it. It is a decent dance and clearly took a lot of work. Taylor's is very repetitive, seen it so many times before.

And oftentimes, public reaction is all that is needed to bring a piece of art (which is what all of this industry still boils down to, however contrived and materialistic it is), into iconic status, And I believe that Single Ladies has reached the pont of Iconic status, in that in ten years time, when I think back on 2009 I'll probably only remember Single Ladies as a music video from that time. I will not remember Taylor Swift's. Infact, If can remember it at all I've noticed that I often, in my own head, I get it mixed up with Avril Lavigns "Girlfriend", the end of Destiny's child's "Bug a Boo" in the high school football field, and Marilyn Manson's "Tainted Love". I know this is a horrible analogy, but it's like Warhols Cambell's Canned soup series. The public reaction to it was the catalist for it's iconic status. And I believe that the general publics reaction to Single Ladies was enough to send it in to iconic status. Still, all my personal opinion tho. ![]() ![]() |
