You could try Open Office:

http://www.openoffice.org/

It runs on MS-Windows PC's, Apple Macintosh Computers, and Linux Machines and is MS Office friendly.

It says on the OpenOffice site that the pre-release of OpenOffice 2 isn't ready yet, but I would use it anyway. I'm using it, it is much better than the old version, and I have not been able to break it! This links straight to it: http://download.openoffice.org/680/index.html

Mind you I'm using Linux as well. Now that is unbreakable!!

As long as you avoid using the database package the prerelease is fine on a Windows XP machine. It's in the database part of the code the problems occur.
