I think in this case he was chancing his arm by having a mate turn up at court as an interpreter. Hoping the judge would be lenienet, different cultures etc.

It does happen though, there are ex-pat Brit communities in places like Spain and Cyprus where some of them dont bother to learn the language because they feel it unnecessary, they generally stay within their own group and when they do ventiure out they will take someone who does speak the lingo.

We call them "black cabs" or "gypsy cabs" in New York. And thank gawd for them. Anyone who's ever tried to get a cab in Harlem will tell you, you wouldn't get a cab if not for black cabs. They doing a service that most of the licensed cabs won't do in a lot of instances.

Well they know enuf to get you where you wanna go. He prolly knew the roads as well as any english speaking cabbie.

Yes I have been in some of them
went to Harlem - was not robbed
but I hear nowdays Harlem is so bad.
