I LOVE Big Brother. Not simply because it's a microcosm of all that's pathetic and unhealthy about modern society, but because it brings out the pompous and pretentious in the viewing public.

Nobody wants to admit to watching it. Yet millions do.

There must be a heck of a lot of folk who draw the curtains, lock the door and turn the sound down low so the neighbours don't know how common they really are in their tastes.

Big Brother will no doubt be more shocking and distasteful than ever in the new series which begins this week.

But you may as well get to know the bizarre characters that no doubt have been hand-picked for the show, because there won't be much else in the papers for the next month.

At the start everyone will be horrified and say they aren't watching that trash. But soon we'll be fascinated like those snake charmer blokes who torment king cobras and risk being bitten in the cause of public entertainment.

Bring it on Big Brother.
