If you are famous why are you not allowed to have your own view? Today in many papers Morrissey has been berated for his stance on Argentina.
Where is it written that those in the public eye have to toe the line?
I have more respect for those who do not sell out their values for a record deal or endorsments, but what are your thoughts?

in this case he's a bit of an attention-seeker tbh. I admire him and everything but there's just an annoying sense of self-entitlement about everything he says.

Everyone's allowed a view, but using your position in this way is a bit self-indulgent. The trouble with people like Morrissey taking up a cause like this is that some of his fans will suddenly agree with him and back him without being able to point to Argentina on a map.

You could argue that newspapers have the same influence though.... He doesn't have a 'position' he is not a teacher or a polititian, he is a singer.

By his position, I mean that he is a celebrity. I love U2, one of my favourite bands ever, but when Bono goes off on one I think he looks like a tool.

And... why are people who sing subject to scrutiny, Why should they have to adhere to the majority?
If you dont agree with his take on issues, it doesen't mean he is any less of a singing talent does it?
Or that they are not intelligent enough to have a reasoned arguement to support what they say due to the fact they are singers.

Because they're using their fame as a soap box. They got famous because they're musicians, not because of what they think you should be doing for Ethiopia. It reeks of condescension and, let's face it, they could donate a lot more than they do.

I totally respect them whenever they bring a plight to the fore, but the majority of the time they're using already-well-known disasters and tragedies to appear philanthropic when in reality it's most likely a bit of publicity.

That may be true of some shaun but not morrissey. That is why it feels unjustified to me he has never bought into the establishment therefore his fanbase are aware of his social and political leanings. It is only when the media are fighting so hard to sway opinion they chose to discredit him.... I find that odd

I don't think it's the case of them not being allowed a view, but more of the case that their views are something so public that they're going to be debated fiercely? Maybe I worded that wrong.. but I think that their views and opinions are subject to much more scrutiny than the average person and therefore susceptible to an incredible amount of backlash. So I think it's not that they're not allowed a view, but that their views are far more publicly discussed if you follow me?

Its a good thing that it is at least debated, and we are not just spoon fed facts. If there is a backlash then great, it brings it to the attention of more people.
It may not be a popular view, it may not be the majority view, but no one can deny him his right to say how he feels...The media reacting with personal insults is wrong imo.

Why should the thread be gasping for air? You're always insisting everyone should be able to express their opinion. I am not a fan, and as far as I know it's not compulsory to be one.
