Chinese police have detained a British man for sexual indecency after an online video that appears to show a woman being assaulted prompted widespread outrage.
A statement from the Beijing police said that late at night on May 8 "a foreign man was acting in a sexually indecent manner towards a woman in public after consuming alcohol." He is now in detention and being "questioned according to the law." The statement confirmed that the man is British and is in China on a tourist visa. A spokesperson from the Foreign Office told Sky News: "we are aware of the detention of a British national in China. "We have offered and stand ready to provide consular assistance." An online video believed to show the incident was viewed by millions in China, and drew an angry response. Some called for the man to be executed. In the video a woman is shown lying in a flower bed, while a Caucasian man stands over her. The woman is crying, and her clothes are dishevelled. As a group of men - believed to be passers-by - come to her assistance, she says "I don't want this, I don't know him." The man is then set upon by a group of Chinese men. He is heard to say "okay man" in what sounds like a northern English accent. Later in the video the group of men repeatedly kick him as he lies on the ground. "He wanted to rape a Chinese girl", says one of the men, while another calls him a "stinking… foreigner who does whatever he wants in China." Sky The details are vague but if he's sexually assaulted her he deserves more than a beating. Last edited by Mrluvaluva; 11-05-2012 at 04:10 PM. |
