A woman has been let go by her company after posting a controversial photo on Facebook.

Lindsay Stone, 30, was pictured flipping the bird while in front of a 'silence and respect' sign at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia - an image that went viral and was heavily criticised for being 'disrespectful'.

According to the Boston Herald, she quickly apologised on Facebook and removed the picture, saying: "Whoa whoa whoa... wait. This is just us, being the douchebags that we are, challenging authority in general.

"Much like the pic posted the night before, of me smoking right next to a no smoking sign. OBVIOUSLY we meant NO disrespect to people that serve or have served our country."

However, a Facebook group named 'Fire Lindsey Stone' was started and accumulated more than 32,500 likes.

Stone and the photographer Jamie Schuh were both let go by their employer, nonprofit organisation LIFE, stating: "We deeply regret any disrespect to members of the military and their families."

The pair made a public apology regarding the incident.

Stone's father later said of his daughter: "She's not happy at all. She's just devastated.

"She had no idea that she was going to hurt anybody. It was never her intention."

I don't think they were sacked for the actual act it seems more like they were sacked because it went Viral and got so much negative attention that the employers was probably worried about what people might think about them and how it might hurt the business which is understandable

I'm really torn with this for a number of reasons.

1) I'm a strong advocate of free speech.

2) I'm not someone who believes in "supporting our troops" for absolutely no reason whatsoever. There is no global threat anymore, and people have personal choice about whether or not to join. They haven't been drafted in.

3) This is a really disrespectful thing to do. I don't give a ****, but if a family member was in that cemetery then I'd be pretty peeved off with the whole thing.

Do I think she should be fired? Probably not. People are stupid show-offs (I include myself in this too), and I've done some things in my time, that I'd be deeply embarrassed about if someone had captured that moment, so I won't be throwing the first stone at her, for I definitely have my own sins.

I think that's more than an overreaction. Maybe they could internally discipline her if they were really that upset, but she obviously mean that picture as a joke. There was no malice behind it.

It was Arlington Cemetery. It's not a place for jokes. If she couldn't be serious for a moment at a place like that she had no business there.

He reasons for doing it don't really make sense either. What authority is she challenging by doing that? She definitely deserved the sack.

It was disrespectful, this is a tough life lesson for her.
I just hope it doesn't affect her future job prospects, as said we all make mistakes.

It probably hints at some bad values so from experience I think she would need to be sacked and re-evaluate her life and her priorities. Is she more interested in showing off to so called friends and disrespecting the dead, or is she a responsible citizen who respects her employers and the families of the dead people?

We've all made mistakes and this was quite a serious one, however to take her livelihood away over it is probably a bit severe especially if she has dependents. I would probably give her a final warning that makes it very clear any further behaviour of this type will be met with instant dismissal.

Also not many people would work with someone that can't even show respect for the dead.
