Default Janitor finds dead baby in high school bathroom

Quote:
A dead baby has been found inside a high school bathroom after a 16-year-old girl who may have been sexually assaulted gave birth.
The baby - which officials referred to as a fetus - was found by a janitor, and school staff used surveillance footage to track down the teenage mother.
The girl was scared, confused and had not known she was pregnant, her mother said.
Police are now investigating whether the teenager was sexually assaulted by a 23-year-old man she had been seeing against her parents' wishes.

The teenage mother gave birth at South Houston High School, Texas, on Wednesday night and was identified by the authorities on Thursday. She is now receiving medical treatment, KHOU reported.
It is not clear whether the baby was stillborn or how far into the pregnancy the girl was. An autopsy will be performed on the baby later today.
The girl, who was alone when she gave birth, could face charges if the baby was near full-term when it was born.

The girl's parents, who also had no idea about the pregnancy, believe the father of the child is a 23-year-old man her daughter was seeing against their wishes since last summer.
The teenager ran away from home for a few days in August, the mother said, leading her to file a police report.
Houston police are treating the case as a sexual assault investigation.

In Texas, the age of consent is 17 unless the age gap between the people involved is less than three years.
Pasadena Independent Schools District (ISD) spokeswoman Renea Ivy-Sims said the 'fetus' was found at about 9pm on Wednesday, People reported.
'We had a very tragic situation to occur at our campuses,' she said.
'Pasadena ISD Police Department investigated through the surveillance equipment that we do have available and were able to identify the mother of that baby.'
Pasadena ISD released a statement, which said: 'We encourage parents to use this tragedy to talk to their children and remind them that they are not alone.
'When students have concerns, whether medical, social or academic, they should talk to an adult.
'Students can always talk to a teacher, counselor, principal or assistant principal who will guide them to the help they need.'

...awwww, poor thing...to have to go through a pregnancy on your own at any age but at 16yrs old, so sad...

..I don't understand though, what charges she could possibly face..because she was under 17yrs/she'll face charges because she's a minor..?...

'Students can always talk to a teacher, counselor, principal or assistant principal who will guide them to the help they need.'

...well she wouldn't have spoken to them if she felt that she would face charges if she did...how alone she must have felt.....

A 23 year old man seeing a 16 year old girl is just wrong IMO... Something dodgy going on there. I feel bad for the girl, but at the same time I also think that her leaving the baby to die in a bathroom is disgusting... The article is probably making it worse than it seems... I can't imagine her giving birth to a healthy baby and then just throwing it out. There has to be more to it than that.

It says she might face charges IF the baby was near full term... The implication being that it may have been born alive and that she either killed it herself in a panic, or simply abandonned it there on the floor where it then died for some reason that might have been preventable if she had told someone.

The potential father may of course face statutory rape charges.

Hypothetically, if she really "didn't know she was pregnant" and it was stillborn, then it was probably a miscarriage somewhere in the mid-20-weeks range.

..yeah this was her dilemma wasn't it...she was 16yrs old and would probably feel she was unable to tell anyone...(and there may have been the complications of a sexual assault from someone she had been seeing against her parents wishes..)...and that could have meant the baby would have lived if she had felt able to reveal her pregnancy...but then in not telling anyone, that might have caused the baby's death..just really sad all round...a lose/lose situation..?...we'll wait and see what the autopsy says as well, whether her child was stillborn and whether nothing would have made any difference...(other than possibly medical attention and a medically aided birth obviously..)...she's old enough to be charged for something like this/too young to engage in sex..it's a crazy world/crazy laws etc...I hope anyway that she gets all the support that she needs right now as she was unable to feel that she could seek any support through her pregnancy....I mean I know that your girls would never feel anything like this because you're you and fairly fabulous and they would always feel that they had your full support through anything but can you imagine how it would feel for one of them to have gone through anything like she must have had to and felt completely alone....
