Police raid three football clubs
Police have raided three football clubs as part of an investigation into alleged corruption in football. Newcastle United and Rangers FC are believed to been raided but the third club involved has yet to be named. The operation is not connected to Lord Stevens' ongoing Quest inquiry into the Premiership and was "totally independent", police said. Search warrants were executed on the club premises and two homes between 0730 and 0900 BST. A City of London Police spokesman said: "We can confirm that search warrants were served at three football clubs and the homes of two individuals in connection with corruption in football and its impact on owners and shareholders." A Northumbria Police spokesman said they were aware that "an operation" had been carried out by their London colleagues at St James' Park, the home of Newcastle United. A spokesperson for Rangers FC said: "Rangers football club was asked to co-operate with a City of London police investigation and have done so, extending every co-operation to police. "We have been requested by police not to comment further while the investigation is on-going." http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6901085.stm |

Yep, just heard on Sky News.
Wonder who the 2 individuals are? Edit: I seem to remember Souness denying any claims that Newcastle were involved in any corruption scandal when he was in charge during Lord Stevens' report. From June: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/6755991.stm In a statement through his solicitors, Souness said: "I cannot understand why my name features in this report." Portsmouth and Newcastle feel they have been vindicated by Stevens' findings. A statement issued by Pompey said: "We're not surprised the club and our officials have been exonerated by the report. "Although there are transfers involving Portsmouth FC, the continuing investigations are into the agents and not the club. "We always act in accordance with Premier League rules and have fully co-operated with this investigation." Newcastle's statement read: "The report makes clear that Newcastle officials have done nothing wrong and have at all times offered their full co-operation." |

The Daily Record understands that Rangers and English Premiership outfit Newcastle are two of the clubs involved in the high level probe. It's believed the search is linked to the £8 million transfer of French international Jean-Alain Boumsong, who moved to Tyneside in January 2005 - just six months after joining Rangers from Auxerre on a free transfer. |
