Default Help to Save Scheme

Just trawling through the money expert site and come across this again

https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/sa.../#helptosave-1

You are eligible if you receive Universal Credit

or receiving working tax credit or child tax credit

t's a new type of savings account specially designed for low-paid workers. On the face of it, it's pretty simple. You can save between £1 and £50 per month, but you don't have to save every month. At the end of two and four years, you're paid a 50% bonus, maximum £1,200. It's easy access, so you can make withdrawals if you need to.

free money if you can manage to save a bit, what's not to like

this is just a free service brought to you by Cherie, so be glad, it's not political

also don't forget the married/civil partner allowance if one of you isn't working

I don't think this is really relevant as it only applies to people over 85 at this point (most of whom are obviously not working anyway!)

It was replaced with this: https://www.gov.uk/marriage-allowance

Which may be useful (but only if one person is earning under £12,500 and one over £12,500).

We got it when the kids were li'l and my wife was only doing a bit of freelance writing here and there, reduces your tax by about £20 a month which isn't bad. Best part though was that we found out about it quite late so we got it backdated for 3 years and got a lump sum of £750 which was nice . Not sure if they still backdate these days... if they do I think it's only 1 year.
