The SNP Vote was rejected
But the Speaker of the House has amended the Governments Bill and the Labour Bill. So the Labour Bill could win. Outside Parliament There are Loads of Protestors. ![]() ![]() [Sir Lindsay Hoyle faced calls to resign and for his predecessor John Bercow to return after the Speaker took an exceptional decision to allow multiple Commons votes on the Israel-Hamas conflict. The Commons Speaker sparked uproar on the SNP and Conservative benches after he announced he would select Labour’s bid to amend the SNP motion calling for an “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza and Israel. It had been expected Sir Lindsay would select just the Government’s amendment seeking an “immediate humanitarian pause” to the Israel-Hamas conflict, which could pave the way for a more permanent stop in fighting.] https://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/pa...-decision.html https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...arliament.html Last edited by arista; 22-02-2024 at 09:43 AM. |

What an absolute farce in parliament at this moment in time.
The useless Speaker has created chaos. What a mess this whole vote on Gaza is turning into. Last edited by joeysteele; 21-02-2024 at 05:30 PM. |

Now they're voting on whether to sit in private. Asked for by the Cons. Israel's Netanyahu must be rolling about in hysterics if he's watching this childish playground nonsense on such a serious issue . |

He's a very poor Speaker.
This today though has shown parliament at its worst. On what has become and will continue to be, one of the most concerning and dangerous situations for the Middle East and the wider world. A serious issue, turned into farce in the UK parliament. The government looking ridiculous. Labour with a hollow victory.. The SNP rightly aggrieved although they were going to vote for their own motion and then too support the Labour amendment over the Con one. So a bit of unnecessary hysterics. So with the government pulling their own amendment seconds before the vote . More than likely in my view, because many Con MPs were going to vote too for the Labour amendment. So an abandonment of government in the end. Childish and ridiculous. In my view. |

They were all grand standing. It has done nothing to improve the already low opinion most people have of them

However, the SNP were on opposition debate day, bringing a motion on a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict. Labour with Starmer, to save a rebellion, was to put forward their own amendment to the SNP motion. Then when Labour's was known. The Cons decided to put an amendment of their own. Just to add to the circus. Then when it, in my view looked like the SNP would go through with the Labour amendment in place too. That many Con MPs likely to support it. The Cons pulled their amendment barely seconds before the votes were to be put.. That is shocking governing. So much for improving government with integrity and being more professional, which Sunak claimed he would bring to government. Last edited by joeysteele; 21-02-2024 at 07:34 PM. |

The whole thing was a meaningless waste of time, tbh.
Does anyone really think Israel cares if the UK asks for a ceasefire? Have they nothing better to do?

Exactly what I said to Mr C last night, complete waste of time, Nethanyahu is not listening to Biden why would the UK have any influence and even less so now after this farce

I think the SNP used this ceasefire motion to try to expose divisions in both Parties. The SNP motion without either Labour or Con amendments would have been voted down by the government voting numbers anyhow. So were the SNP really serious. For me, the one who came across the worst though was Stephen Flynn, he was rightly annoyed but came across too aggressive. Really however, the whole parliamentary process needs updating. It doesn't serve anyone now. It's Party leadership dictating to MPs what they should think and do, immaterial of what they feel as to their own conscience on very serious issues. Patrick O'Flynn (Political Commentator):
Being widely reported that the Speaker allowed the Lab amendment because so many Lab MPs were scared of potential violence if they could not vote for it. *FROM ISLAMISTS*. That's the story: Islamic radicals have warped British democracy via implied threats of violence. Last edited by Crimson Dynamo; 22-02-2024 at 09:00 AM. |
