Katie Boulter: British No 2 reveals death threats and online abuse to highlight disturbing side of tennis betting
British No 2 Katie Boulter has opened up about the level of abuse aimed at some tennis players and revealed she and her family have received death threats. Boulter shared her experiences with BBC Sport to highlight the issue of players receiving toxic messages online. The 28-year-old's examples included a message telling her to buy "candles and a coffin for your entire family" with a reference to her "grandmother's grave if she's not dead by tomorrow". Another message stated she should "go to hell" as she had cost the poster money, and another read "hope you get cancer". "I just wonder who the person is that has sent that. I don't think it's something that I would ever say to my worst enemy. It's just an awful, awful thing to say to anyone. It's horrible," Boulter said. "As far as death threats, it's just not something you want to be reading straight after an emotional loss. "A lot of the time you get it after you win as well." Boulter believes much of the abuse comes from gamblers who have lost money and while she has learned how to better handle it over the years, incidents can raise genuine concerns for her safety. "I think it just kind of shows how vulnerable we are. You really don't know if this person is on site. You really don't know if they're nearby or if they know where you live or anything like that," she added. "At the very start of my career, it's probably something I took very personally [...] getting comments about the way you look." "It becomes more apparent every single time you go on your phone." The message Boulter received relating to her family came during her French Open first-round victory over Carole Monnet on May 29. After losing the first-set tie-break, Boulter won the match 6-7 (4) 6-1 6-1. Boulter said she is concerned that both the frequency and severity of the abuse are increasing and worries about the potential impact on younger players. "I think it increases in number, and it also increases in the level of things that people say. I don't think there's anything off the cards now," Boulter said. Boulter said she is getting ready for the level of abuse to increase when she plays at Wimbledon, herhome Grand Slam which starts on June 30. The British No 2 also said she receives online abuse if her partner, Australian world No 12 Alex de Minaur, loses a match. …full article… https://www.skysports.com/tennis/new...tennis-betting |

But if what she's saying is true (as I am very cynical towards Sports stars nowadays tbh,) then that's obviously awful for anyone to have to go through. Just like the stalking situations that Raducanu had to face, or the booing that some of the US Open crowd were doing towards Serena Williams a few years back. It's not on.

…just going back to her looks and your comment…?…I think maybe also, ‘betting disappointment’…(…if that is indeed the motive behind comments…)…aimed toward a female in competition may take on a differing tone than aimed toward a male sport person…female physical appearances are often the topic of judgement and scrutiny as opposed to their performance…

Obviously I don't believe that men should be attacked for their appearance either. But in general these guys take on the different tone (that you're referring to,) because yes it's more embedded in society to judge a woman more on her appearance than we do men. But I do think that these arseholes know that in general, women will be more visibly upset if her looks are attacked. And all over a game of Tennis nonetheless, it's pathetic behaviour.

She should seriously go to the Police about that comment.
Just like Raducanu should be dealing with that persistent stalker through legal means.

…yeah that’s the crux of it and I really don’t see that pride in appearance plays any part…the abuser will find that way to abuse and whatever they weaponise to abuse is all on them, not on the victim…those weaponised things though can often change though, dependant on gender…

…I’ve just seen this article also…
'The abuse never stops' - Lionesses to avoid social media England forward Alessia Russo says she prefers to stay off social media during major tournaments because of how "damaging" abuse can be. The 26-year-old was speaking about the issue alongside her Lionesses teammates as they prepare for their European Championship defence in Switzerland next month. Their comments come after British tennis player Katie Boulter spoke to BBC Sport about abuse and death threats she has received online, Manchester United midfielder Grace Clinton 22, says she will try and stay away from social media to avoid a "toxic environment" while Chelsea forward Lauren James said "the abuse never really stops". "I think every player might have a different story about that side of the game but it's definitely one that can be really damaging," said Arsenal forward Russo, 26. "I have faced it in the past and I think most players here have. When I was younger I probably got sucked into it more. "I read it more than I should have and listened to it more than I should have. The only opinions that matter are my team-mates, my coaches and my family. "In my first Euros I was on social media and I would have a look, have a scroll, and I got caught in a trap sometimes. "Going into the World Cup, I completely came off everything and I had people to run my Instagram. I just focused on the tournament. "It's personal preference and whatever works for the team. Staying away from it and staying focused as a team is what works for me." Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast, James discussed abuse she received, saying: "Sometimes it's not even to do with my performance, even when someone loses at Fifa [EA Sports FC video game], my card scores against them and they're sending me abuse. "I guess when it's your first time though, maybe it might touch someone but I'm used to it, I'm going to just brush it off my shoulder." Chelsea midfielder Kiera Walsh told 5 Live she no longer uses social media, while club teammate Lucy Bronze added: "People write horrible things and obviously our families read it as well and it can be upsetting if you see something that's not very nice. "Social media is amazing in one way and absolutely awful in another way. I think most of us have been off at some point." Manchester United midfielder Ella Toone said that while she will still uses Instagram during the tournament, she will respect the decision of any team-mate who decides to keep off social media while in Switzerland. "I know other people turn their phones off. We have that conversation and all know how each other wants to go through the tournament," she said. "If I see something on Instagram I'm not going to tell someone or blurt it out to the team because they don't want to see it. I think it's a personal preference." Having experienced online abuse as a young player, both her and Russo want to help younger players in the squad deal with it. "I think from experiences me and Alessia have had in the past, we've always been the people that want to make sure the younger or less experienced players coming into the squad feel relaxed and feel OK," Toone added. "We have such a talented squad. We have bags of talent coming into their first tournament so we want to make sure they are at ease and feel confident within themselves." |

I hate to keep bringing this up on SD topics, but do you think that the rise of Incel culture is making some of these situations more common?
