A post-mortem is due to be carried out on the body of police chief Michael Todd, whose apparent suicide has been linked to extra-marital affairs.
The chief constable of Greater Manchester Police was found dead at the foot of a mountain in Snowdon, north Wales, yesterday. A Press Association source claimed the married father-of-three's "affairs" had prompted him to kill himself. It was an "open secret" he had indulged in at least one fling with a female police officer, the source said. Mr Todd, 50, is also understood to have spoken to fellow senior officers about his personal problems in the days leading up to the death. Letters addressed to his family are believed to have been discovered near his body and ITN reported that his recent behaviour had caused concern among those close to him. There was also speculation a Sunday newspaper may have been planning an expose. Publicist Max Clifford said he had been approached by a man last week who claimed to have a "damning story" that would "bring down a top copper". But he played down suggestions the person in question was Mr Todd. An inquest into his death will be opened and adjourned later today and his body formally identified. Mr Todd, a rising star in national policing, had gone missing on Monday night. Manchester deputy chief constable Dave Whatton said: "(On Monday) our chief constable Michael Todd was off-duty walking in Snowdonia. "Last night, we became concerned for his welfare and as a result searches started to find him. "As you can imagine, all of his friends and colleagues are extremely upset. "Our hearts and thought are with his family, and I would ask that they be left in peace to come to terms with this tragic shock." John Stalker, the former deputy chief constable of GMP, said Mr Todd was a "leader" who had gained "immense respect". He said: "All in all I think the force and the public have lost a very good man." Mr Todd had been tipped as a future commissioner of the Metropolitan Police - the UK's highest policing position. Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said: "Chief Constable Todd has had a long and distinguished career in various forces and has contributed greatly to the fight against crime and terrorism." Source |
