Portuguese transsexual bank clerk Nadia Almada, 27, of Surrey, has won reality TV show Big Brother on a huge wave of public support.
And she has revealed she now had her heart set on getting married, saying that “every girl’s dream is a white wedding”. Nadia, 27, became the programme’s hottest ever favourite to win, and duly claimed the £63,500 prize. With her squawking voice and grating laugh she seemed unlikely to endear herself to the British public, but became the 1-50 favourite for victory. With an exuberant character, she survived four evictions and won over the nation. Throughout her time in the house, Nadia kept secret from her fellow housemates the fact she was born a man. As the result was announced, Nadia screamed “Oh my god” and began to shake. Runner-up Jason grabbed her in an embrace and told her: “You’ve won it, you all right man?” Nadia, trembling and bewildered, repeated: “Oh my god”. Seeming stunned and in genuine shock, she left the Big Brother house flanked by fireworks. With the crowd offering rapturous applause she repeatedly mouthed “Thank you, thank you.” Hysterical following her win, she said: “It wasn’t meant to be like that, honestly.” Dressed in a tight black dress, she said: “There’s no words that could show the happiness inside me.” Told that she had secured 74% of the overall vote, the women formerly known as Jorge broke down in tears. Nadia’s mother Conceicao had flown from Portugal to be in the crowd and to see her daughter win the reality TV show. Asked why she had kept her transsexuality hidden from her housemates, Nadia said: “It wasn’t a secret. “It was more a reassurance of myself, it was my self ambition to achieve. “It was very hard because there were times that I felt I had to lie a little bit and I didn’t want to lie at all. “There were moments when I felt I would just come clean and be honest about it.” The winner burst into tears again as she was reunited with her mother. “I’m speechless, I can’t say anything, I have no words to describe my feelings,” said Nadia. Davina said: “I can’t think of a more worthy winner, we have all enjoyed watching you.” By the time the voting lines closed, 3,863,696 had voted for Nadia and 1,335,246 had voted for Jason. Shell and Daniel received 347,051 and 685,995 respectively. Since the vote to win lines opened after last Friday’s eviction, 6,366,325 votes have been cast, taking the total number of votes cast for the whole of Big Brother series 5 to 14,790,551. Earlier, Shell Jubin, 21, from Glasgow, was the first person of the remaining four housemates to be evicted last night. Daniel Bryan, 30, from Hull, followed, and 30-year-old air steward Jason Cowan claimed the runner-up spot. Nadia later told reporters at a press conference that she went on to the show to make people believe she was a woman. “I am now accepted by the public as a woman and I feel much more comfortable about myself,” she said. She added that she was shocked that her mother, who she had not seen for a year, had travelled from Portugal. “I never thought she would be here. I hope to spend some time with her.” Scotsman News |
