The affair that gave Laura the ex factor

People may not know how to behave like decent human beings any more, but everyone knows how to act like a star.

The X Factor's Laura, a girl barely off the shop floor of life, is already saying things like: 'I am a private person. This is a private relationship.'

She's even been to the Groucho Club in London! Get her!

Well, it's a little too late for those pleas for understanding and clemency, sweetheart.

Having a romance, which is definitely what it looks like, with a television executive attached to The X Factor show, has certainly put a spoke in her wheel of fame.

Perhaps she has failed to recognise that the British public are sticklers for fair play.

For one talent contestant to be having a close relationship with a talent show producer is anything but fair play, however innocent the participants feel it might be.

And surely it was this friendship, rather than any rigged vote, that accounted for the singer being booted off last Saturday's show?

Certainly, Laura's expression when she was voted out was a classic study in lip gloss and hubris. She didn't look sad or shattered, which is what one might have expected.

Instead, she looked furious, which told its own interesting story. We all know that The X Factor is a cynical exercise in sugared showbusiness manipulation, but you know what? There is only a certain amount of cynicism that the voting public can stomach.
