Cheryl Cole has reportedly been assigned her own SWAT team after receiving a threatening letter from a fan.

According to the Daily Star, the man said he would kill himself and his family over the festive period for the Girls Aloud singer.

A source said: "He hadn't threatened Cheryl's safety but this level of obsession is worrying and it prompted a new evaluation of her security needs.

"She has always been well protected as a member of her band but her celebrity status has risen so fast she needs new arrangements. Not since Robbie Williams has one star so captured the public's imagination in the UK, so she needs a team working daily to protect her."

The squad is made up of former police officers who are apparently equipped to ensure Cole's safety at all times.
