Default Stolen phone- keep the same number?

Has to be the worst weekend ever

First I lose my wallet on Friday night, then I lost my phone last night and even though I was back really early due to being ill I didn't even notice until today

Anyway I know to change your sim but keep the same number you have to have sim card number etc

Is there a way to keep the same number on a different sim without having those details?

Yeah when my phone was stolen i was on contract [dunno if you are] so my mum stopped to contract, blocked the phone and had a word with T-Mobile//Carphone Warehouse and we managed to get the same number on my new phone/contract!

My brother got mugged back in December; phone your provider (O2, Orange.. whoever) and cancel the SIM card and I think you just ask them if you can keep the number and use it on your new SIM or whatever, but I know it can be done because my brother has the same number on his new phone!
