Default Car crashes into a shop with a man on his bonnet on Coronation Street

...Coronation street, Blackpool that is

A PEDESTRIAN was catapulted through the doorway of a shop in a terrifying crash in Blackpool town centre.
Police say the accident happened when the driver of a car accidentally pressed the accelerator pedal rather than the brake while exiting a junction on to Coronation Street.

The pedestrian, believed to be a local man in his 50s, was carried on the bonnet of the Fiat car before it crashed into the shop front.

Police said the injured man, who had to be released from the wreckage by the fire service, suffered a suspected broken leg.

The driver, a local woman in her seventies, suffered minor leg and chest injuries.

Customers and staff inside the Access Disability shop, which sells and hires scooters and wheelchairs, spoke of their shock.

Owner Sandy Kirkman said: "The car went right through the door of the shop with a fellow on the bonnet.

"The driver's foot seems to have slipped and she's gone straight across the road, hit the pedestrian and he's been flung straight into the shop.

"It's smashed all of the doorway and the window and there's glass everywhere. It was a bit of a shock to say the least and it has totally devastated the shop."

The automatic car, a Fiat 500, was left with a severely damaged front end with the bonnet open. It is not yet known whether it is fit to repair.

A police spokeswoman said the building had been declared structurally safe by Blackpool Council building inspectors, despite damage to walls.

The incident happened around 1.10pm yesterday.

The pedestrian and driver were taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

Police at the scene said an investigation into the accident was at an early stage but corroborated Mr Kirkman's belief the incident had been an accident.

Sgt Adam Lloyd, from Blackpool Road Policing Unit, said: "The car came through the junction and was in collision with the pedestrian.

"The man sustained a pretty nasty leg injury and the driver sustained whiplash-type injuries.

"We believe both parties are local and have been taken to the Blackpool Victoria Hospital."

Cars were diverted around the area for around two hours while scene investigations were carried out.
