Former boxing champion Mike Tyson's four-year-old daughter has died a day after a 'tragic accident' in her home.

Exodus Tyson died in hospital after she was found with her neck caught in the power cable of a treadmill machine at her home in Phoenix in the United States.

Last night Phoenix police spokesman Andy Hill said Exodus was pronounced dead in hospital just before midday on Tuesday.

He said the little girl had been playing on the treadmill at the home gym on Monday when her head apparently slipped inside a cord hanging under the console.

Tyson was in Las Vegas at the time of the accident and Exodus was found by her seven-year-old brother who alerted his mother where she was cleaning in another room.

The woman, who has not been named, helped untangle Exodus and began CPR.

Attempts to revive the child were made as she was taken to a nearby St Joseph's Hospital and put on life support.

Police Sergeant Andy Hill said it was a 'tragic accident', saying police did not know how long Exodus had been trapped there.

'Somehow she was playing on this treadmill, and there's a cord that hangs under the console - it's kind of a loop,' he said.

'Either she slipped or put her head in the loop, but it acted like a noose, and she was obviously unable to get herself off of it.'

Sgt Hill said former heavyweight champion Tyson had been in Las Vegas on business but flew to Phoenix immediately after learning of the accident.

Last night he confirmed Exodus had been pronounced dead at 11.45am on Tuesday, adding: 'Our sympathies go out to the family.'

Tyson lives in the house with the mother and the two children, MyFOXPhoenix.com reported.

Exodus is the youngest of Tyson's six children by a variety of ex-wives and girlfriends. She was born in March of 2005.

The others are Gena, 20, Mikey, 18, Rayna, 13, Amir, 11 and Miguel, 7. In 2004 it was reported that Tyson was living in Phoenix with Miguel's mother, who owned their house. It was also reported that the pair had ended their romantic relationship.

Miguel is believed to be the brother who found Exodus, however authorities have not confirmed that.

The current relationship between Tyson and Exodus' mother is also unclear, with some reports claiming the pair are married while others claim their romantic relationship ended in 2004.

Tyson could not immediately be reached for comment but 42West, a New York City public relations firm representing him, released a statement on the family's behalf.

'The Tyson family would like to extend our deepest and most heartfelt thanks for all your prayers and support, and we ask that we be allowed our privacy at this difficult time,' the statement said.
