Default Hype and glory, but how real is reality TV?

Quote:
JUST when you thought the sun was setting on ITV's Celebrity Love Island, lashed amid a sea of falling ratings and bad publicity, you are just one day away from another media storm of publicity over reality television.

Big Brother series number six is upon us. Brace yourself for a glut of hype about the new housemates, a newly designed house bristling with 31 spy cameras - even heat-seeking cameras to see beneath duvets to detect any off-screen clinches between contestants.

E4, the TV entertainment channel run by Channel 4, has this week screened adulatory compilations, including Big Brother's Most Outrageous Moments, Big Brother's Funniest Moments, and Big Brother: The Top 20 Housemates.

All of this culminates in near hysteria tomorrow night as we see inside the Big Brother House and meet the contestants. The E4 connection is particularly significant because tomorrow, for the first time, subscription-only E4 becomes available to freeview customers, potentially opening it up to an extra 11 million viewers. The combined public relations teams of ITV and Channel 4 will be at full stretch to ensure their shows and their celebrities are the ones we watch. In both cases, securing the early support of the tabloids is crucial.
