EastEnders star Zahra Ahmadi has quit after producers refused to give her meaty storylines.

The beauty, who played Shabnam Masood, told bosses she wanted out after barely featuring in new scripts.

A soap source told us: “Zahra was really disappointed with the way scriptwriters used her character. You hardly ever saw her on screen. If she had been given exciting scenes she would have stayed for a long time.

"Working on EastEnders is a dream come true for any aspiring star. But she began to feel she was wasting her time.”

The decision of Zahra to quit comes a month after the BBC1 soap was blasted by race equality chief Trevor Phillips.

He claimed EastEnders had so few ethnic characters it more accurately reflected the East London of the 1960s.

The Masood’s are the soap’s first Muslim family since the Karims, who moved out of Albert Square in 1990.

In July axed star Angela Wynter, who played Yolande Trueman, accused the soap of “operating a quota system” on the number of ethnic characters after her scenes dwindled ahead of her exit.

EastEnders denied her claim and yesterday execs insisted strong storylines are coming up for the Masoods.

Zahra, 28, is now looking at new roles — but hinted at a return to Albert Square

She said: “I’ve made the tough decision to leave as I'm still young and I want to try other roles. But I’m really happy the door has been left open for me to return as it has been a great experience.”

I read that earlier. Real loss for EE in my opinion. Both the actress and character had real potential but at least they have left the door open for her to return.

I've just read the best news about EE, well for me anyway, Jane and Christian's mum is coming back this autumn! She was last seen back in 2006 for Jane's wedding to Ian. I can't wait! For any of you that don't know she played Aunty Mabel in Come Outside with Pippen the dog. I love her, should be fantastic!

pinkmichk I did too. It was so cruel of him to buy a new cot when Sean was just trying his best to please Roxy, I mean who cares if it's not brand new, it's the thought that counts, and the way Archie did it was just bad.

Eastenders chiefs could be sued for unfair dismissal - over the 10-month tot who plays Oscar Branning.

They axed Gabriel Miller-Williams after nine months to save on the Ł300-a-day taxi fares to bring him to the set in Elstree, Herts.

Mum Claire, 39, only found out when the cab failed to pick him up last week.

She fumed: "It's a disgusting way to treat people. We still haven't had a call explaining why he was sacked. I've sent his contract to solicitors to investigate legal action."

Gabriel, of Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, has played salon boss Tanya Branning's son since he was six weeks old. In June he was on the cover of TV Times, which called him the world's best behaved tot for his calmness on set.

Claire said he got a new six-month deal in June but bosses had now replaced him with the child of a BBC employee.

A show spokesman said: "We're looking to hire local babies as we watch costs." He claimed Gabriel's agent had been informed.

EASTENDERS celebrated a double victory over Coronation Street last night at a top TV awards bash.

The BBC1 show reclaimed its Best Soap crown at the star-studded London show.

And Walford favourite Charlie Clements — who plays Bradley Branning — completed the rout by winning Best Soap Actor. Emmerdale was another big winner — as it picked up Best Soap Storyline for Laurel and Ashley’s cot death heartache.


Charlotte Bellamy — who plays Laurel Thomas — also went home with the Best Soap Actress award.


But Corrie did have something to cheer about when Michelle Keegan (Tina McIntyre) was presented with the prize for Best Soap Newcomer.
