WHAT A jaw-dropping surprise. It came as a bolt from the blue and there were gasps and cheers in equal measure from the onlookers — reactions that the girl on the receiving end took like the good sport she is. No, not Sam being name-checked as this week’s eviction victim. Davina’s black bikini. The hostess peeling off to reveal her fantastic figure in the briefest of two-pieces was a classic moment and a fitting tribute to Sam’s time in the house. The marketing student had spent most of her time sashaying around in her scanties and giggling. Nothing much changed during her eviction interview, except she had thrown on a few more threads. She seemed completely overawed. As I predicted last week, she blossomed after Lesley left, but she seems to be one of those people who is used to cruising through life on her looks alone and floundered a bit when she had to back them up with some personality. Desperate During auditions she described herself as “very interesting” and “very intelligent”. Maybe she is, who knows? Was her full-on snog with Makosi and her awkward lap dance with Anthony during the speed-dating task a desperate bid to remain in the house? I think it was just Sam being Sam. From my time in the house I know that you tend to forget the cameras and simply get on with it. People are too suspicious — and that includes folk inside the house and out of it. They seize on to buzzwords far too readily. When Maxwell passed remarks about Roberto’s Italian accent during one of their spats, it wasn’t premeditated xenophobia. It was just a knee-jerk reaction unleashed in the heat of the moment. Yes, it reflects Maxwell’s immaturity to deal with these situations, but Roberto was swift to point the finger of racism. Along the same lines, Maxwell has been accused by some fans of homophobia because of his knock-about banter with Craig who is, he tells us, not gay. And, by extension, I’ve had my fingers burnt for sticking up for Maxwell. On some Internet sites, I’ve been accused of promoting homophobia too, which I clearly and honestly am not — not in the slightest. As someone who has been on the receiving end of all sorts of sinister speculation and light-hearted ribbing myself, I feel that Maxwell’s repartee with Craig is of the harmless, good-natured variety. There’s no dark side to it and I think Craig realises that. It’s simply Maxwell’s cheeky-cheery chappie personality writ large. In fact one of my highlights of the week was seeing him change the food order in the diary room to wangle some booze. I thought it was hilarious. Again people have asked me, how can I say he is honest and open when he does things that are a bit underhand? The point is, I really think he is a genuine character. What you see is what you get — unlike some. The name Kemal springs to mind. Bullying is a huge Big Brother buzzword this year, one that Kemal uses a lot, and it all depends on how you define it. There’s a big grey area. You could say that his treatment of Roberto — talking over him, not listening to anything he says — could be construed as bullying. My interpretation? Lighten up, everybody. It’s entertainment. To me, Roberto comes across as a bridge-builder, whereas if anyone is playing up to the cameras, it’s Kemal. It’s fascinating that he’s gained the sort of liberty in the Big Brother house that he never seems to have had on the outside — maybe because he’s now in his element as a natural prima donna. It was a good laugh to see Roberto out-camp Kemal when it came to the speed-dating. The Italian gave a commendable performance and just went for it. But I was less impressed with Saskia’s handling of Derek in the loft. Now, I don’t like Derek. If I hear him say one more time that he wants to leave, I’ll go in there and drag him out myself. He’s a cocky article, he’s tiresome. If I were in the place, I’d be tempted to nominate him twice! Revenge So I should have enjoyed seeing Saskia exact her revenge on him for calling her the “silent assassin” by making him bark like a dog. Yet I thought he had the measure of her and it was the busty brunette who ended up looking an idiot. In fact, I wouldn’t mind seeing the back of her, not because I dislike her, but simply because it would shake things up if she left. Again people are getting over-excited by the whole love interest thing. Yes, Saskia and Maxwell were in bed together, but it’s obvious that she doesn’t reciprocate his feelings. If Saskia were to leave, I think Maxwell’s relationship with Anthony would develop. The dark-haired dancer isn’t an influential figure but I think he, Saskia and Science, is one of this year’s sleepers. It was interesting to see Anthony’s lukewarm response to Sam’s lap dance, which could have been down to the fact that he’s a professional hoofer and knows how it should be done! Fans have mixed feelings about Vanessa because she was supposed to have had coaching by the king of last year’s lip-gloss bitches, Marco. But she’s pleasant and kind and I think the producers saw something in her that is only just beginning to shine through. I like the fact that she seems disappointed that nobody makes much of an effort with the tasks. The fools have failed another one and my heart went out to Science in his role of the pirate captain trying to motivate his scurvy knaves. Their motto seemed to be “none for all and all for one” and Science seemed to have a lot to contend with in there. He’s a thinker, and I can imagine him being from a cool group of friends who are very positive and stick up for each other. Not exactly the situation he finds himself in at the moment. I am almost reluctant to say this considering that there are now only three girls left, but I’m still not keen on Makosi. It’s “me, me, me” with Makosi, but I think the house would suffer if she left. However, now that they’ve elbowed a minor player with the eviction of Sam I think it will be time for one of the dominant personalities to go this week. I’d prefer Saskia to go over Makosi, Kemal over Saskia — and Derek over any of them. Having said that, Lesley came in second and left second, Sam entered third and left third — who was fourth into the house? Maxwell! Well, tarra for noo! SundayPost |
