Charlie was just being nice, as is his stock in trade. He was trying to put Bea at her ease, he knows she'll be hated, but why not offer her solace. He's just an all round nice guy who doesn't like to see people upset. Also calming her down will gt her off Roddie's back, so Charlie is trying to help his best friend, which is another laudable characteristic.
