Question 'BIGOT’ victim Gilian Duffy could make £250K for selling story

THE granny branded a bigot by Gordon Brown refused his pleas to shake hands for the cameras, we can reveal.

But lifelong Labour supporter Gillian, 66, could now make up to £250,000 if she sells her story.

She agreed to meet the shamed PM in her home after the gaffe that threatens to sink his political career. Grovelling Gordon, 59, spent 40 minutes apologising for making the comments in his car moments after discussing immigration with her, unaware he was still wearing a microphone.

But when she was asked to shake the PM’s hand outside in front of the world’s media, she flatly refused. Yesterday, Gillian, of Rochdale, declined to comment further on the row.

Her nephew Peter Duffy, 51, who sat in on the conversation between Gillian and Mr Brown, said: “She is a Labour supporter through and through and she had already signed her postal vote for them, but it hasn’t been posted.

“I think she is just disappointed really because she is not a bigot, she is just a fantastic lady.

“My auntie was going shopping for bread and milk when she met Mr Brown so she could not get anything in like tea or coffee and couldn’t offer him anything.

“It was a bit of a dry day all round for Mr Brown, to tell you the truth!”

Last night Peter added: “One of Mr Brown’s PR people came round the house and asked whether it would be all right if he could call in person and Auntie Gillian agreed.

“He just said it was a heat- of-the-moment thing.

“I think she was just asking the sort of questions that everybody is wanting to hear.”

Last night Gillian’s neighbours said she had become a spokesman for the “common person”.

“It was a Susan Boyle moment,” one said.

Gillian has been “completely overwhelmed” with deals to sell her story.

PR guru Max Clifford, 67, said she could bank £250,000 out of the row.

Top PR firm Bell Pottinger was sifting through the offers. A spokesman said: “There is substantial money to be made. I’m just not sure if she has the appetite for it.”

She wont be worrying about the economy anymore if she accepts the offer.
