10 children injured in crash near Rhoose school

Rhoose is a village in the Vale of Glamorgan, about 15 miles outside Cardiff. It is situated between the towns of Barry and Llantwit Major.

In a statement, South Wales Police said: "Emergency services are currently in attendance at Fontygary Road, Rhoose, following a road traffic collision at around 8.50am.

"A car has overturned near Rhws Primary School and there are a number of casualties - including adults and children.

"The ages of those involved are not yet known. The road has been closed."

Three rapid response vehicles and five emergency ambulances were sent to the scene, where there were "multiple casualties" but there is no information as to the extent of injuries.

The Vale of Glamorgan council said it had no further details at present but would issue updates during the day.

A resident told BBC News she heard reports of a car swerving before hitting people.

"Apparently the driver had a coughing fit and slammed on the accelerator instead of the brake," she said.

"The lollipop lady was escorting a number of kids across the road at the time.

"The road is closed and air ambulances are on the way, heaps of ambulances and fire engines are at the scene."

Local resident Glynis Watson said: "A few of the mums are turning up and taking their children home. They are all traumatised.

South Wales Fire Service have described it as a "very serious accident".

The Welsh Ambulance service confirmed six patients have been taken by ambulance to University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

Four of them were children with head or abdomen injuries and fractures, and two were adults with fractures.

Another two adults and a child, all with minor injuries, were taken to Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend by ambulance.

The 61-year-old male driver of the car is assisting police with inquiries.

A South Wales Police spokesman said: "At this stage the collision is not believed to be a deliberate act."

Thankfully, no-one killed .....

The driver whose car overturned outside a Vale of Glamorgan primary school injuring nine people has spoken of his "terrifying experience".

Motorist Robert Bell, five pupils, a lollipop lady and two other women were injured as parents took their children to school in Rhoose on Thursday.

One girl, nine, is still in intensive care.

Mr Bell, 61, said his grand-daughter told him he coughed before he lost consciousness in the crash.

He described how his grand-daughter, who was travelling with him to Rhiws Primary School, helped him after he was knocked unconscious.

"I was stationary and my grand-daughter said I coughed and the next thing I knew I'm coming round and I'd been unconscious and upside down," he told BBC Wales.

"I haven't a clue what happened. Luckily my grand-daughter came round before me. She just has tiny minor cuts. She had the sense of mind to undo her seatbelt and reach over and undo mine and we then dropped."

Mr Bell suffered cuts and bruises in the crash in the village of Rhoose near Barry at 08:50 BST on Thursday, and has some stitches to his forehead.

He is due to be interviewed by police, who are not treating the incident as deliberate, later.
