Suing him for copyright infringement, Will’s beef with Williams lies in the fact that he believes his brand ‘I Am Other’ disturbs his alleged right to the phrase ‘I AM‘. Indeed, in court documents obtained by Wenner’s ‘Rolling Stone’, the following is given as the reason behind his decision to sue the ‘Lap Dance’ maestro:
“The registration of the mark . . . is likely to dilute the I AM mark and the WILL.I.AM mark“.

In response, Pharrell told the publication exclusively:
“I am disappointed that Will, a fellow artist, would file a case against me. I am someone who likes to talk things out and, in fact, I attempted to do just that on many occasions. I am surprised in how this is being handled and I am confident that Will’s trademark claims will ultimately be found to be as meritless and ridiculous as I do.”

According to the documents, Will states that both brands are ‘confusingly similar’ but is yet to respond to the above statement or calls made by ‘Stone’ to quiz him further on the matter.

Pharrell's now filing a lawsuit against him

Pharrell Williams has filed a lawsuit in the US regarding an ongoing dispute with will.i.am over the 'I Am' branding.

It was reported last week that the Black Eyed Peas rapper was intending to file a claim against Williams and his I Am Other brand, because it bore too close a resemblance to his own i.am+ range.

will.i.am was quick to deny claims he was planning on suing Pharrell Williams for the use of the brand.

However, Williams has now filed a case in a US court asking them to rule that his I Am Other range does not violate any trademarks owned by will.i.am, reports BBC Newsbeat.

The lawsuit claims that will.i.am sent letters to Williams asking him to stop using 'I Am' branding on his website.

Williams's use of 'I Am' does not feature fullstops between the words and so the star argues that I Am Other does not "infringe, dilute or unfairly compete" with will.i.am's branding.

He added that will.i.am's trademark for 'I Am' covers clothing and so his claim to the branding is "relatively weak" considering similar trademarks already exist.

will.i.am's team have yet to respond to the new lawsuit filed by Pharrell Williams.
