Really, my Gran, auntie Marie and auntie Mary all ****ing strong legendary women and had their husbands under their thumb for the best parts of 50's and 60's.

I see where your coming from in a way that people seem much more me,me,me nowadays but the 50's isn't some magical time zone where everybody held hands and danced round camp fires.

Mental illness was frowned upon and seen as weakness, homosexuality was seen as unnatural, marital rape was fine etc etc.

I'm not sure how the rest of your post is relevant. No time is "perfect" but in certain aspects things were better back then and in other aspects things are better in the present.
