None of the 185 branches of Subway across the UK and Ireland that now sell halal-only meat are in Lincolnshire.

Ham and bacon has been taken off the menu at these outlets as the sandwich chain said this was 'following strong demand from our Muslim customers'.

Muslims are forbidden from eating meat from pigs and any non-halal food and participating outlets will show a special 'All meats are Halal' sign.

In the halal-only branches ham and bacon has been substituted for turkey ham and rashers.

Currently none of the Subway stores in Lincolnshire are halal and it is the choice of individual outlets whether or not to be. One of the nearest halal only Subways is in Nottingham.

Traditionally halal butchers cut the throats of animals while they are fully conscious. Some halal butchers now practice pre-stunning but this is not permitted by some Islamic scholars.

In Britain, killing an animal while they are fully conscious is illegal, but the law gives special exemption, on religious grounds, to Muslim and Jewish meat producers.

I'm probably going to sound unbelievable racist and seem like a ****, but I'm sick of muslims getting special treatment. I can slightly understand if they changed the non-pork food to halal. If I went to a muslim country I wouldnt expect them to accept my traditions and go out of there way to cater for them. If you dont eat pork you dont order bacon? I dont like olives but I dont ask for them not to be served.

I notice the thing that Reece posted also mentions Jews... so on behalf of my own religion I want to say that it is one of our laws that we don't cause animals to suffer and Kosher slaughtering is as fast an painless as possible with more and more people using the stun method first. I can't pretend to know much about Halal slaughter... However... people inevitably complain about Kosher and Halal slaughtering while being perfectly happy to eat other more conventionally slaughtered meat without having any clear idea what atrocious places abattoirs are. How do you think non-Halal and Kosher meat is slaughtered? Do you think they sing them to sleep? What's more, all kinds of animals are abused and mistreated all over this country on a daily basis. I think their care and welfare would be a more suitable cause for concern.

Always getting there way was an exhageration and I didnt mean it, I just meant special treatment. As far as I know there are laws that mean all animals have to be stunned so its painless with the exception of Halal (It could be Kosher, but I dont know much about that so I wont comment on it). I know with Halal some Muslims object to the idea of the animal being stunned before slaughter.

Yes,abbattoirs are vile places,so much abuse occurs in them before the animals are even killed,I have thought about this and really believe maybe the throat cutting is in the end less painfull and stressful and probably quicker than the barbaric way abattoirs treat animals,I am so glad I don't eat meat when things like this are debated.

halal methods also emphasise treating animals kindly before they're slaughtered
so raise them healthily, prevent distress by not killing them in front of eachother etc

We have to treat them as well as possible surely,its good that halal raise them healthy and don't kill them in droves in front of one another,i don't even like the way they are transported in those bloody horrible trucks,its all horrible but I would goo the most humane and painless way

why are you blaming muslims for the decision to remove bacon when it was SUBWAY who chose to do that

IT'S A PRIVATE BUSINESS not YOU. and there actually are places in muslim countries which go out of their way to serve pork and alcohol for western tourists. why would anyone have an issue with private businesses making their own private decisions to cater to certain people? do you want the government to force all private businesses to serve bacon just so people like you who can't bear the idea of a tiny minority of them not doing so are satisfied?

It was requested. I'm not blaming Muslims, I didnt mean the "getting there way part" I just feel they get separate treatment to other religions. I understand the whole business aspect, and from a business point of view why would they stop selling bacon. If you dont eat bacon dont order them.

I think Turkey is classed as a Muslim country..when I was on holiday there I had the best full english breakfasts ever...bacon, pork sausage..the lot. That might just be because it was the touristy side (Marmaris) but the people cooking it had no objection.

I agree though, that a better option would be to ADD halal options to the menu rather than make it all halal, as I found out yesterday that apparently that wouldn't be a problem aslong as the non-halal and halal didnt touch each other or something..

There's a noticable Indian population at my university and they offer Veggie meat in place of cow for them along with the other option at the cafeterias.
