Most likely going to get flack for yet another thread on religion, but what influenced you as you were growing up to believe in what you do, or lose your faith etc?

I was raised catholic but when I was about 14 I stopped going to church etc then around 6 months ago I started going again and its really helped me.

I was born without any religion. From what I know of my father he was an atheist and my mom kinda believed in buddhism at one stage. but I think she's agnostic now. And that's how I'd class myself.

I find the people who are certain of no god, relying on the same type of faith they criticize people who believe in a religion.

So yea I don't know if there is a god and I don't think there is any way to prove or disprove it. I suppose I'm slightly envious of those who believe in something. And I love finding out stuff about different beliefs.

like any made up thing - unicorns etc

If you make an extraordinary claim and you wish people to believe it the burden of proof is on you

remember every religionist is an atheist about every other god and religion

Its when you learn about how rainbows actually occur that you think...hmmmm ( and from an airplane rainbows are fully round)

It's my understanding that the three major western religions believe in the same god, however they worship different prophets? I'm not 100% sure on that.

And isn't religion about believing where there is no proof?

yes but there are hundreds of gods. even in christianity you have Catholicism and Protestant etc. Every one thinks they are the one true blah blah blah.

Yes, sadly this faith myth is used like a badge of honour when really its no more than wishful thinking with your fingers jammed in your ears.

the Qur'an states that humans were given eyes, ears and minds for a reason, that we must utilise them and investigate the truth. non-muslims and people who simply inherit their beliefs from their parents are invited to question, reflect and scrutinise the arguments presented by it.

When discussing religion you seem to talk as though every single one of them is an extremist.

It's like generalising about anyone who's ever committed a crime, no matter how small, are all serial killers.

I don't understand how you say I Don't believe in God because there is no proof he exists but then you go ahead and make plans for next week as if you had a proof that those days do exist.Lots of things we cant see it doesn't mean they are not there.

there is substantial evidence to suggest that next week will arrive, scientific peer reviewed evidence

i grew up in a religious household, went to classes during my childhood, learnt how to pray, fasted etc. but there was still so much for me to learn, and it's only recently that I felt compelled to study things for myself which has made my faith go a lot stronger. for me, it's the one true perfect religion and definitely like no other. i base my life around my beliefs, not the other way around.. it's always on my mind and affects everything that i do. i'm not perfect, no one is, but I'm aspiring to live up to the rules I'm expected to follow, every single minute detail. when you dedicate your life to something like that it gets really frustrating to see it be so misunderstood.

I was brought up in a Christian family , we went to church every week, I went to Sunday school and loved it, I still hold my religious beliefs, although I don't instil it to my children, they do know I believe in 'God' if they wish to follow me then that's ok,if they don't ,that's ok too,they have all been christened and they will chose their own path,I believe they have to make their own minds up.

Claudia's right, the three abrahamic religions are fundamentally similar, with more or less the exact same stories, rules, prophets etc

The Qur'an states that the Taurat (Torah), the Injeel (Gospels) and the Qur'an are all books from Allah revealed to three prophets in their time; Moses, Jesus and Mohammed. The Qur'an goes on to say that, if the Jews and Christians had remained true to the revelations sent to them they would also be Muslims as all people who believe in the one God and do not join partners with Him or worship idols, believe in the Last Day, the resurrection of all beings and the Final Judgement are actually Muslims though they may not call themselves that. The Christians parted company with the teachings of Allah and his Prophet Jesus when they assigned him as a son of God and declared that God is a trinity i.e. three gods; Jesus, God and the Holy Ghost. The three religions would be the same if they had stuck to the original plan.

I do love religious buildings too,I find a certain peace in them that you cant get anywhere else.I also had that romantic notion of being a nun at one point,lol yeah,yeah,hilarious I don't think I would have liked the confinement

my local mosque is a small makeshift one that was originally two flats, during the month of ramadan though it has about 50+ people congregating for the daily five prayers and 100+ for the special nightly prayers.

when it's not ramadan a lot of people still attend five times a day and without fail 200-300 every single friday for the jummah prayers

the figure is much higher for the official mosques. stay mad, sis

yes but thats not a church and your religion is less developed and not as far up the line to extinction as the UK christian one. To be honest religion thrives on poor education (not a slight at you) .
