Default Ben frow confirms Viacom wants to renew big brother contract

Quote:
Channel 5 has fought off interest from rival broadcasters to renew its deal to air Big Brother and its celebrity spin-off.

The broadcaster, which is close to being acquired by Viacom in a £450m deal, is set to strike a deal with Endemol to extend its rights to the entertainment format.

Director of programmes Ben Frow, speaking at the Edinburgh International TV Festival, said that he planned to renew the agreement, which is understood to expire at the end of the year.

This comes despite interest from ITV, which was reported to be looking at the international hit format for its female skewing network ITVBe earlier this year.

The former TV3 programme boss added that he would commission comedy for the channel for the first time in many years.

He said that it would potentially work with future sister-channel Comedy Central on shows.

“Comedy is something that we need to get our teeth into,” he said. “Channel 5 should be evolving and trying new things.”

Frow added that he would limit the number of benefits-themed shows going forward following recent C5 shows including Benefits Britain and forthcoming doc Gypsies On Benefits & Proud.

The channel’s relationship with GroupM Entertainment is also likely to continue. Frow said that working with the content arm of the advertising agency gave him an “additional budget” and that it allowed him to save cash for shows that would not work for GME.

“It does help me to manage the money,” he said.

The same people will always remain in charge because it's Endemol that runs BB not the channel that broadcasts it.

It means we may have no chance of getting LF back though I suppose.

I know but I was hoping they'd take action with them. It just looks like they'll renew and the show can continue however endemol like.

This tbh.

C4 couldn't give the slightest of ****s about BB. Their last few shows were absolute meh and then it was axed and left in the ****. The hate for C5 and lust for C4 by so many is something I always found weird. It's like C4 never did half the stupid **** C5 does themselves.

It's abit like the guy who never gets over his ex gf even though she's long gone

Why though. The celebrity version has been far better on C5 than channel 4.
Though admitedly the production is not great on channel 5 let's face it. But then again the production wasn't great on channel 4 towards the end either.

I guess it's good news

But the channel that runs the program has to have a say in things does it?

Yes because apparently Endemol want to give live feed but c5 doesn't.

Hopefully Viacom give it the go ahead.

All they need to do next year is give us Live feed, VTS for both BB & CBB and no series twist.

That would probably be more easy to run then having to plan a twist everyday

They won't due that. VTE makes far to much revenue.
The only reason VTS is in place for CBB is to stop people like Gary going who cost a lot of money to book.

They did it for BB12 & BB13 and I'm sure VTS will make them more money as most people want to keep there favorite in like the Get Jale out campaign to save Ashleigh, If they have done VTS I'm sure they would get a lot more money

Well if anything this CBB proves that we don't need constant twists, the series has been constant drama, arguing, funny stuff and more without any interference at all from the producers, yeah we had that small twist with Dee on launch but it wasn't anything that massively affected the house..they have dumped this scrap heap thing on us now though but surely they should see just by the past 5 days that it's best left to flow naturally..

We really do need them to stop ****ing about with noms too.

The Dee thing wasn't even a twist, just a small task which was ok. If they have to do something I'd rather it was something inconsequential than bringing back more 10 year old twists.

Exactly, they did it for 12 and 13 and reverted back to VTE as it clearly made them more.

Viacom are also a high earning company so maybe they might go with VTS, also I saw somewhere on a article about BB and Viacom that Viacom care more about the production of there shows then the news and attention it gets, I guess that's a good thing

Have you seen the state of their other reality shows?

I wouldn't be surprised if the show keeps themes but becomes...

Big Brother: Geordie Shore
Big Brother Valley Girls
Big Brother London Lads
Big Brother: Sex on the Bench
