I don't like Ryan, but I think there's not anything "racist" really in that. This comment on Daily Mail rings true...

I'll be honest, I don't get it! Yesterday, I saw a video on facebook of 2 African Americans who had dressed up as the Wayan Brothers in White Chicks. They had painted themselves white, yet everyone found it hilarious and didn't make a single comment about it being racist. I just don't understand!!!

Exactly, White Chicks humor is about 2 black men dressing and trying to act like 2 white teens.

Do you know where "blackface" originated from and how it was used in the past, hence why it's offensive?

I'd love some evidence of "whiteface" being used to oppress an entire race back in the day.

Jews have been pretty oppressed over the years. Eddie Murphy still whited up and played a Jew. And I'm still not offended. Because it was a joke... a harmless joke not meant to offend anyone.

I think it's a tricky one because everyone has different barriers of what they find offensive.

For example if one of my friends dressed up as me and but some brown paint on their body I'd be offended - it's like people only see you for a colour or a mock image and nothing else.

As for the whiteface, I can't say I do as I'm not white so I've never really thought about it, and don't really get offended on other peoples behalf. I guess you could say the same for the Jewish one, although I have no idea what that's about as I haven't heard of that until now.

I've never really minded the whole concept of "dressing up as someone" so long as the intention were clear. For example, 'blacking up' to go as, say, Stevie Wonder for a fancy dress party is a lot less worrying / offensive than randomly doing it - and I can't say I get the reference Ryan is going for in his picture. Unless someone can explain the inspiration for it it does come across as little more than shock tactics or ignorance.

As with your Stevie Wonder exmple, Ryan was dressing as a specific person - someone he met on holiday.
