I've never understood why Channel 5 never did this considering how many twists C4 used to pull off thanks to the entrance being hidden from the view of the housemates once the door was closed.

I always found that weird with BB6 how the hm's couldn't actually see them go up the stairs as they separated the living room area outside .

So they said their goodbyes in the living room then made a mad dash through the side door through the empty house on their own .

With exceptions to Vanessa's surprise eviction when they were in the dining area and Craig's eviction i think .

Yeah, stuff like that shows that production would actually plan ahead with the series and make sure all eventualities were prepared for.

Rather than now where they need three meetings to decide the rules on this week's nominations after they've taken place so that no matter what the results are they get the people they want up for eviction.

Yeah I'll never forget them nicking food and milk from the fridge . Even Orlaith stole some face wipes from the bedroom as well .

Did solve the problem of the eviction countdown tension being ruined by Big Brother having to tell them to shut the door.

BB4 probably had the best layout inside and outside the house really - a producer controlled door at the bottom of the stairs and then the crowd positioned by the studio rather than by the house, giving a bit of breathing space between the house and crowd and somewhat recreating the set up at Bow where they could reunite with their family before facing the crowd.

It wouldn't be the same on C5 though as they got rid of the tension music and the robotic BB voice. They always seem to rush the housemate out of the house nowadays, so a closed-off staircase would be wasted on C5 as they'd probably just open the doors straight away, meaning we won't see the housemate standing at the top of the stairs, while BB tells the house to close the front door.

If they're going old school they'd be no stairs. With the crowd now being next to non-existant I'd go for a different approach - a simple "front of the house" and a small studio based eviction audience. Perhaps even repurpose The Other House as the studio as I think that space is bigger, and heck maybe the Other House Garden might become the new walkway into the house. The current eviction set could then become a rather amazing task arena.
