I don't know about "strong", but to keep us living the lifestyle to which we've become accustomed, yes this is sadly true. Although advances in automation also mean that fewer and fewer man hours are needed, whilst populations continue to swell. And we wonder why those populations are starting to "leak out" in dinghies .

I think people lie to themselves and really believe that they would want to "stay and make their country better" (or rebuild it if it's been destroyed by war) if it was them in that position. The truth is that if Britain's infrastructure fell apart tomorrow and people were fighting over the last food in the shops, of COURSE huge numbers of us would be piling our kids onto boats and trying to get to the continent.
