can't nobody hold us down
|
Emily got kicked out today for using this word. Do you think it was a strong/offensive enough word to be kicked out for?
In my opinion, it wasn't. In my school, people are using this word a lot, they even call each other it, and it's black people as well as white people a lot of the time. I don't use this word, and I won't chose too either. Nothing's done about it here. Maybe it's just me, but I don't feel as if it was as rude, or any less rude than the racism thing from CBB. Don't take this seriously, this thread isn't meant in an offensive way. I'm just curious as to peoples thoughts on it. |

There's a bit of a difference when it comes to saying it on national telly though.
And since I've debated this to death, that's all I'm going to say on the matter at the moment. |

Well when you're in there, people have said they forget their on TV, or being filmed. It just becomes your own little world.

Well I think this is a serious debate, using the N world in any circumstance doesn't relate to Emily.

Here it is:
How many times do i have to answer this one? First of all, I have to point out that I'm of Jamaican ancestry. Now, this word was a word that I grew up hearing over and over again. No one uses this word like my mother. Trust me. The whole point is that - when black people use this word we know what we are saying. When a white person uses this word we don't know what they're trying to say. So my advise to white people is to avoid using this word in the presence of a black person because we don't know what you're trying to say by using this word. It's double standard, I know, but it's like telling racist jokes. Jewish people can tell Jewish Jokes, black people an tell black joke. Basically, if you're not one then avoid anything that could be construed as racist. |

It's because it's not said between different races, but kept within a certain race/ethnic minority. I understand that it's complex and difficult to grasp, but that's the way it is, and to brand it as double standards now is not going to get anyone anywhere.

But the word was used back in the early 20th century by white people, as an offensive word, which they use to brand the black people.
Personally, that's why I see it as wrong for different cultures to call each other that word. |

Yeah, I know what you mean Mark. Of course it used to be extremely offensive to begin with; it still is depending on the context and person, but then as racial tolerance increased, this is how the word was both adopted and adapted. As I mentioned before, it's complex to get your head around but kept within a certain race/ethnic minority is different to throwing the words about to anyone and everyone. I don't think it should be right in any context either - I never say it - but people generally need to be careful before they speak.

There was also the case of a mayoral aid who was forced to resign for using a word that starts with the same four letters as the N word, but meant stingy or mean and had been around since the 1300s. Due to forum rules I can not say what this word is, because it sounds like the N word
Widening this up, there is also the issue of other words or phrases, which now become unacceptable because people believe they have racist roots, even though some of these beliefs are plain wrong. Because people believe them, that is enough to ban them. Here is a brief list, and if anyone is offended I will edit them out. Picnic - Believed to refer to lynching parties in the American deep south, although this is not true. A good egg, originally meaning that the person was a good person, but it is now banned because the expression "Egg and Spoon" is believed to be cockney rhyming slang for another racially offensive word Nitty Gritty - Believed by some to refer to the detritus left behind at the bottom of slave ships. Incidentally one minister got condemned for using this expression |

Emily was thrown out of the BB house, because she used the "N" word. If this word wasn't considered as being very offensive by Endemol's editing team, then she would still be in the BB house.
So, it all comes down to that really. Every other part is irrelevant. nodisharmony |

Can you imagine the damage that would be caused if she were left in.
BB would certainly get thousands of complaints and taken off air. the general public who have atleast 2 brain cells find this word offensive. |

But this was not on the live feed, and two of the HM's dealt with it.
A warning and this would not have happened again, Nobody outside would have been any wiser, and an unpleasant word would not be being banded about by the media |

What if there was a leak What if Endemol's group of editors are being watched by a third party. A limerick was edited out last time. Knock, Knock, Hint, Hint. I think they are being watched by someone. Sounds plausable. nodisharmony |

What term would we use? I'm just asking a serious question now. Is it ok that I get called "white" can we use the term black without coming across as racist?
