Quand il pleut, il pleut
|
..This might have already been posted somewhere but I’m just having a slow morning of browsing….
A senior SNP official has apologised after telling Europe that Scotland “hates the United Kingdom too” after Britain’s entry flopped at Eurovision. Rhiannon Spear, a Glasgow councillor and the SNP’s national women’s convener, initially defended the post on her Twitter account, which she wrote after the UK’s entry received “nil points”. She wrote: "It's ok Europe we hate the United Kingdom too. Love, Scotland." There have been claims that the UK’s poor Eurovision performance was partly the result of hostility towards the UK on the continent due to Brexit. Ms Spear later urged those taking offence to “have a word with yourself” and attacked UK Government policies. She said: "The UK has a billionaire Chancellor who won't give NHS staff a fair pay rise during a global pandemic" and claimed Boris Johnson is "more interested in lining the pockets of his Tory donors than feeding hungry children". https://uk.yahoo.com/news/snp-offici...175310421.html |

…I don’t know her, I’m not up on Scottish politicians but she’s obviously entitled to her opinion is the name of the game as we see it….I’m not sure that not giving the NHS nurses a fair wage rise and being shamed into providing sustenance for children have added much to making the U.K. great again, either…

Charming.
It astounds me that people think our poor placing in Eurovision is because of Brexit when we've done really poorly for years. I mean... Israel. They've been in the news a lot in the last few weeks, and incited a LOT of hatred against them. They finished about eight places above us. This is nothing to do with Brexit and as for the politician quoted above, she is a disgrace. Pull out our money and tell them to do one. I'm talking about Eurovision but it could equally apply to the SNP. Last edited by Livia; 24-05-2021 at 09:23 AM. |

We've been doing badly in Eurovision even before Brexit.
I mean it's obvious there's more than just not liking our entries to the contest. When even places like Israel, Republic of Ireland and Malta don't even give us a single point. There's something going badly wrong. You can regardless of what the song is, near guarantee countries like Cyprus will give Greece 12 or a very high vote or vice versa. The UK doesn't seem now to have any ' friends' anywhere to even do that once. Even Australia gave us nothing too. Plus more politically, the SNP haven't ANY reason whatsoever to be impressed with the UK. With how the overall UK governments totally disrespects the strong views of the Scottish Nation. british music is very good real quality music that is, not some unappealing artists such as Michael Rice, Gemini, James Newman, Electro Velvet, Joe & Jake what i personally liked from UK at eurovision was Engelbert Humperdinck, i mean ok bad result but it was a decent song by a decent lovely performer, lovely thing to watch all in all Bonnie Tyler did the best she could too, maybe not a good result but i also enjoyed and still listen to believe in me |

Well the SNP hate or dislike the UK, and they're encouraging Scotland to do the same.
They've really amped up the divisiveness since the Scottish parliament elections. |

i mean, if the song and performance were fantastic, we could rightly say, hmm something not right there .... but the whole performance was complete pish, there isn't a polite way of putting it. Thats why we got zero points

We're going to have to agree to disagree on this one Bots. There were plenty of dreadful um-pah Europop entries that should have got nil points. Not saying we should have had loads of points, more that there should have been more countries down the bottom with us. I mean, the winners.... it's like a British act from 40 years ago!

It made me smile. I can see how it got a few points, there's years past it would have done much better. I mean I heard Lulu with Boom bang a bang from the 60s as our entry once.. Good grief. I agree ours was drab, his performance forgettable. The verses sounded flat. The chorus strong but no real hook to grab you. |

I always say it about the Irish entry the last few years and similar could apply to the UK I think but why do we and you keep sending stupid pop/dance songs that try to sound like other countries who have been successful? I reckon Ireland should send something completely different to what other people are sending like a more traditional type song, it might not help and it might but it would at least be different and more authentic. Like for the UK, why not send a Welsh song or a more traditional Scottish song

The Republic have won it 6 times and the UK 4 so they do know how to put together a winning formula

Eurovision is a performance contest rather than a song contest.
The songs are never played in the years after, and there is too many of them during the show anyway for the public to pick one. It is the performances people remember. As to whether countries are being judged by Europe, Germany only got 3 points in total, and Germany, Spain and Netherlands also got nothing in the public vote so by that logic they are hated also. One thing you have to bear in mind about the huge Italy public points boost is that they were fav to win.
Fav to win = lots of bets on them to win = lots of people with a financial stake in them winning voting like crazy. It's a standard betting phenomenon with "bets on public vote" type things, because it's the very unusual scenario where those who have placed the bets can actually influence the outcome. tl;dr being bookie's favourite to win in a voting event in turn makes you more likely to win, and I think the large surge of votes for Italy somewhat reflects that. As for the tweet: a bit ill-judged, most people who want Scottish independence don't "hate" the UK at all and a post-Indy Scotland and England will need to have a solid and amiable relationship for various reasons. We're not enemies . However, the UK's act: Awful. Yes, genuinely the worst of the night. Germany was "bad" but at least in that "lol omg this is so bad" way which is mildly entertaining. The UK wasn't entertainingly bad... it was just bland. Completely and utterly forgettable, literally no redeeming features. Zero performance, zero staging, bizarre ... costume? ...? Lacklustre song and mediocre vocals. It is semi-political but come on. It deserved zero and got zero. |
