What’s your opinion on this?

I'm not keen on Police sneaking about but if you are on your phone whilst driving, you should be prosecuted. Too many people cause accidents whilst using their phones, it is illegal for a reason. Its 6 points and a fine for being caught using your phone and if that is enough to tip you into a ban, so be it.

Yep. I agree.

It’s fine when it’s wireless or at least hands-off but text-driving is a big no-no. By all means call your brethren but you can’t be touching the mobile while you’re driving.

Have only had one coppa in my friendship group - he joined and lasted less than a year, as he was outcast for not joining in/not finding it amusing when a group of them were kicking the **** out of a very-under-the-influence homeless man for fun. That plus he found a heart attack victim that had been lying dead for two weeks and had melted to a radiator. So both sides of it there really. On the one hand yes a lot of them become heartless arseholes. On the other, you can see why it happens and their empathy gets destroyed over time.

He was in 10 months and a lifetime of PTSD.

We're talking about coppers catching people committing motoring offences.

I've never had a ticket because I don't break the law. Like Zizu, I'm tired of hearing people moan about getting a speeding ticket and/or having to attend a speed awareness course. Don't speed, it won't happen.

Our police may not be perfect but hold them up against US police and they're pretty near.

So it’s all for them to speed set off and the camera and put their lights on because that then makes it legal as if they were on an emergency call then turn off after go thru it.

I’m pleased you haven’t had any run ins with the police but it’s always so up up holds the law that can make a mistake and get the full bollox of your a bad person

But admittedly not potential driving accidents, people obviously shouldn't be using their Phone whilst driving.

I do think the penalties for people on phones WHILE DRIVING are fair and I include stationary traffic at give way junctions and red lights in that - you need to be aware for safety even when stationary.

However I do think there should be a loosening of the law when sensible - e.g. in traffic jams where there's a whole line of traffic entirely stationary, or other situations where the vehicle isn't moving at all and it's clearly not a safety issue. The ability for someone to get hefty points on their license or even lose it for texting someone while stuck in deadlocked traffic is stupid and entirely unfair. Even if they kept fines in place for it... I think points should only be for when it's clearly unsafe.

I oft use the example - imagine your 10 year old kid is waiting to be picked up somewhere... a club or lesson... and you get stuck in traffic that isn't moving at all. Of course you're going to call or text them. You're not going to sit there, car not moving, saying "Oh well little Jimmy might be stood by the side of the road worrying and expecting me and get scooped up by some paedo, but I can't send him a text to go back inside and wait, cos that's ILLEGAL!". Realistically... no one is going to to that... and sending that text shouldn't cost you 6 points.

My friend was pulled for being on her phone for a very similar reason - she was late picking up her kid. The Police Officer who pulled her asked the reason for being on her phone and she explained. He did let her off with a warning after he checked and saw that she had in fact texted her son to say she was going to be late and there was no other activity on the phone (her data was off and so she hadn't been on the web etc). I know that only works if you physically get pulled and can provide your phone as proof but some Police are understanding.

I don’t really agree with these sneaky tactics the police use but in this instance I am kinda for it. If they’re catching people who are texting or on the phone whilst the car is moving then I think it’s valid but if they’re just trying to get people who are sitting in standstill traffic it’s really unfair.
