BBC News Text:
[England manager Lee Carsley, who has suggested he will not sing God Save the King. The Birmingham-born coach who played for Ireland said that he never would sing the national anthem, adding he was "always really focused on the game". The paper writes if he does not sing it will be in "stark contrast" to Gareth Southgate.] ![]() |

England interim boss Lee Carsley's audition for the top job has been overshadowed after making the shock confession he does not intend to sing the national anthem.
Carsley will take charge of the national team against the Republic of *Ireland for the opening game of what is set to be a six-match trial in his efforts to become Gareth Southgate's full-time successor.

Was just checking if there was a thread on this before I made one.
Appalling. A really bad example to set. Reprimand him. Editing this. Have rethought my replace him comment. I don't genuinely wish him to lose his job. Fair enough. I was wrong to hastily say that.

He says he has never sung the Anthem, i.e the Irish one when he played for Ireland and wont now, he is a football manager not a singer

Because his Granny or his Mum was Irish maybe. He was born in England. Declan Rice and Jack Grealish both played for RO Ireland now they play for England. You don't have to take up citizenship.

He is from Birmingham.
He only played for ROI because he wasn't good enough to play for England. And I'm saying this as someone that does like Lee Carsley, although I'm not sure about him being the England Manager.

Where as he wouldn't have got in the midfield for England back then, and I am saying this as someone that liked Lee Carsley for Blues and Everton. Edit... I didn't mean to be disrespectful btw, I do realize that I probably should've worded a bit better. Plus I do like to see both Ireland National teams do well, as I feel sorry for the fact that they are disadvantaged by being split in two.

Nobody is saying its compulsory. Its respectful. I don't agree with either of these posts. It should go hand in hand with the job. Takes two minutes, and he has to stand there anyway?
